is there a way to mod a 16 ton hydraulic tubing bender (bottle jack style) to not kink DOM tubing?

First of all, that is not a tube bender, that is a pipe bender. The die sizes are completely different as pipe is measured ID, and tube is measured OD.

I wouldn't go wrecking DOM with a pipe kinker.

Yeah the die has to fit correctly. You could fill the tube with sand then try and bend it, but it'll probably still kink.

Yeah, filling it with sand helps, but it still kinks. I'd get a legit tube bender for bending DOM..no need to waste expensive metal.

Electrical conduit bender works if you know how to use it. I've done it that way

Yes it works, I actually have used one quite a bit for thin wall tubing and have made plenty of perfect kink free bends. You just have to make sure your main die is a good to perfect fit, and your rollers need to match the ones that come with the bender are not suficient you will need a machinist to make you custom ones that match your dies. Also you should have atleast a five gallon bucket full of clean dry playground sand as well as a roll of duct tape for sealing the ends.

Step one:
Tape end of pipe with duct tape or use rubber pipe cap to seal one end.

Step Two:
Fill pipe almost to top with sand, while keeping the pipe upright tap the sealed of the pipe on a wood block to tamp the sand down, continue to refil and tamp until your sand level wont drop no more than 1/8 inch when tamping.

Step Three:

Tape the open end or cap with rubber pipe cap and procede to produce your bends.

id rather spend the money on a real bender then go through that on every bend...which is why i bought a real bender...

i got mine with 2 dies for $800 to my door...wasnt cheep, but well worth it

LOL :icon_rofl: The only thing that is real is the pain your wallet is feeling right now. I would rather not be lazy instead of needlessly wasting $800 for less ability. That thing is way over priced and would be totally useless for most of my applications as I do allot of exhaust work and that WON’T do 3 inch tubing. I paid $140 for mine plus another $100 to get it tweaked to make a clean bend and I guarantee it makes equal if not better quality bends if you go about it the right way then your $800 machine. So yeah I would gladly spend my $240 on a much more capable machine again.

I have the 12 ton 'kinker', and after massaging the die's to properly fit the tubing, and building proper 'slides' instead of rollers (that never roll!) it doesn't kink nearly as bad as one would think...... I made it work, and it does bumpers/sliders fine but I DO want a proper bender with the nice 240* dies for doing cage work with when I get the $$$ to spend.

so your telling me your bender will do a perfect 180 degree bend without a kink in thin wall tube? and im lazy because i bought a good tool?

this is made for tubeing, not exhaust pipe...if i did exhaust i wouldnt give a **** about a small kink

if you dont want to spend the money for one like mine they sell the plans where you can build your own....but good try

ill be doing a tube bed soon and she is gunna be real handy

I agree with slo, im in the middle building a very extensive bumper to bumper cage that is time consuming enough without the hassle of filling tubing with sand to get a almost kink free bend, I bought the jd2 model 3 bender with a die and a notcher for about a grand to my door, the guys at jd2 were great to deal with, best money i have spent on a tool and after a few bumbers and sets of sliders it has paid for its self.

Just a reminder, even the smallest kink is a place where your cage will fail in a roll, even if you dont care about your own safety how could you risk the safety of your girlfriend, wife, kids.... its not very often im alone in my truck...
