tubing bender

B&G, I've tried to become more reserved on this board as I'm usually an asshole, but you are smoking dope. You can preach about your pipe kinker all day and how great it is, but the fact is, it is in no way comparable to a tubing bender like the JD2. I have bent literally thousands of feet of tube, and I even have the same bender you are talking about for minor ajustments. Even though my tube bender is air over hydro, I would still rather manual bend with it, than use a kinker anyday. I would love to see some 90*+ bends that you have made with it.

I have one of the kinkers I'll sell for $100 bucks you pick it up.Like new.
38333 zip.

ok soo just a little pdate, my bender came today and without putting sand in it it bent a scrap peice of dom i had laying around 90 degrees without kinking it, and i only brought up dom because i decided to say **** it its not my dd anymore sooo im exo caging it, bout a dana 60 and 10.5 for it, andd a 302...soo unless you think cold rolled steal can handle a roll over in going to go with the dom (not an attitude im actually asking if anyone thinks i can use something cheaper, because if i can...i will)

even though it doesnt kink it, it puts flat spots in the tube/bend. it doesnt stay smooth.

Looks like ass.

yeah it didnt come out perfect but theeres nowhere in my cage i need a perfect 90 anyway, whats your take on what steel i should use?

i used the pipe bender for a long time with decent results, even had multiple rollovers on the cages built with it.is it the best tool for the job?no.but it is a good way to get started and learn the math behind bend radii and figuring out how to space out multiple bends, while making useful stuff.i also have the JD2....a very good machine.i never used the ratchet,as i modified a 10 ton porta-power to use on it.since buying the JD2 i have not used the pipe bender(the JD2 is just much quicker and easier, plus you can go past 90.)does the JD2 make a perfect bend?absolutely not.anyone who has one that thinks it does needs to make a bend and then bandsaw it across the bend to check the profile.there may not be kinks, but the tube is dramatically deformed from a circular cross section.how much of a difference in strength does this make?probably not enough for most to need to worry about, but i just thought that after spending that much i would get a better quality bend.bottom line....beginner making a few bits and pieces, try the pipe bender and get creative.mid level hobbyist and low production professional,go to the JD2.any more, you need to spend the big bucks on a production machine.

im soryy i posted a picture without your consent i will be sure to ask from now on, but i would still love to see your perfect kink free bends oh master teh internetz

Sorry but do you struggle with literary comprehension? As you are the densest person I have ever argued with. Never once did I say you were not allowed to post a picture, I just stated that it was not constuctive to the topic at hand.

Yes they are, they both bend tubing don't they?

Here is a Custom 3 inch H-pipe with QTP cutouts for a Mustang. I dont see any kinks or flat spots in those bends.

I have found through tweaking it that the flat spots are elimintated by fitting the radius of your roller dies to the pipe.

Thank you:icon_thumby: Best tool no, most cost effective absolutely.

That really isn't much of a bend....

Ok here just did this one to prove my point.

you actually just proved my point. That was obviously done with a PIPE bender. Not a TUBE bender. Even with such a SLIGHT bend, see how much it flattened that peice of stock in the bend radius?

Here is with a tube bender:

at best I would use my HF pipe bender to do up some small peices, or some exhaust. Maybe even a bumper if I was desperate. I would NEVER use it to bend up an entire cage.

Ok so all of this advice you are going to dismiss as internet hype?
:icon_idea:
Maybe pick up a book on materials or manufacturing design. It's a fact that your tube kinks are less structurally sound than a proper bend. It is not only about ease of use or the "look" of a bend but what is happening to the material under stretch and compression at the location of the bend.

I use sand and a pipe kinker. I don't know that I would use it on expensive tubing for a cage, but I've made plenty of things with it--park benches and things. It flattens a lot less than that picture shows if it is packed tightly.

ok sooo can anyone tell me what material would be cheapest but still safe if i roll it

ok sooo can anyone tell me what material would be cheapest but still safe if i roll it

that is easy...put a $$ figure on your life and that of your family/friends who ride with you....

safety is as cheap as you want to go....

so, if you "plan" on rolling...i would go for the DOM cause i value my life and my family/friends...and would save up for a true tubing bender to build a proper cage...no sense in purchasing expensive DOM to just make a bend with weakened integrity...

like the others have said, use your HF bender to get some experience makeing bumpers, sliders, and other stuff...just hold off on the cage makeing til ya get a good bender for the cage work......
