I drove my truck to school this morning it ran great as usual but on my way home it died unless I keep it at hi rpm I think it could have been the cat but I don't know please help me it's a 2.8l 1984 4x4

No, that wouldn't be a Cat converter.

Probably a carburetor issue or some "bad" gas.

Reads like engine is stalling from either too much gas, stuck float, or too little gas clogged jets.
Could even be choke plate is flopping around

Collapsed(bad) Catalytic converter would block exhaust flow so you would idle OK but engine would start stalling out at higher RPMs, so opposite of what you described.

That would make sense because it did have carb issues and a lot of vacuum lines were cracked and fell off could it be that to?if not then it would be the choke because it had some play when I last checked and how could I fix this for temporary use as I haven't the cash to get a new one right now

Gotta find out whats wrong first, then a temp fix can be tried.

Good work :icon_thumby:

Thanks for posting the fix
