I drove my truck to school this morning it ran great as usual but on my way home it died unless I keep it at hi rpm I think it could have been the cat but I don't know please help me it's a 2.8l 1984 4x4
No, that wouldn't be a Cat converter.
Probably a carburetor issue or some "bad" gas.
Reads like engine is stalling from either too much gas, stuck float, or too little gas clogged jets.
Could even be choke plate is flopping around
Collapsed(bad) Catalytic converter would block exhaust flow so you would idle OK but engine would start stalling out at higher RPMs, so opposite of what you described.
