Seriously. Almost $400.
I was working on an inop e-shift 4x4 system on a 99 Ranger. More than one issue was present and, as usual, the needed repairs were not presented to the customer correctly. It needed a GEM because the shift clutch relay was not getting grounded, and the shift motor was not spinning up.
Customer approved the GEM but was not told about the failed shift motor.
I vaguely remembered seeing something about repairing them easily and cheaply on here, so I hit up the tech library (Like the new looks of it BTW Jim) and found the article. Pulled the motor apart, cleaned the armature up good (there was a huge layer of carbon on it where the contact ride) and BAM. It worked. Then I told the advisor that "I am F'ing magic".
If it hadn't my department would have ended up eating the cost of the shift motor that Ford wants about $390 for these days.
So thank you Jim, TRS all who contribute to the tech sections, and particular thanks to Mr. Craig T. Evers who wrote and submitted the article I used.
