Transmission
Manual
Ok guys and maybe gals. I need your help. So I checked my transmission fluid on day and saw that it was silver. Not a good sign. I knew I was having transmission issues. So I pulled it and cracked the case. All the gears and synchros looked good. I then thought about doing the HD swap but those are like finding a needle in a hay stack. So I think I'm back to using the original trans and just replacing the t case with a manual one and probably using my electric one and making a doubled. So I have been searching for rebuild kits and they all as for the tooth count on the 6th/rev slider or gear. Now I have never torn into a manual trans so I have no idea which gear is the one I need to count the teeth. The trans is out of a 91 explorer (obviously M5OD). So can someone point me in the right direction for this info. Does anyone make an upgraded shifter assembly? Thanks in advance

It should be the 5th/rev slider/gear. These transmissions are actually fairly easy to rebuild if you have any type of mechanical ability. If you need to count the teeth on that gear then all you have to do is pull the tailshaft housing off. Since you don't know what gear it is that you need to count leave the shifter on and put it in 5th gear after you have the tail housing off.

Thanks for the post. I know its in the tail housing I just don't know what to count. Is it the gear on the shorter shaft? And I should count the slider gear that slides in and out of the gear on the outside? I can't seem to find any pictures of this mystical slider gear that I need to count to make sure I get the correct rebuild kit.

This is the web site I use for an exploded veiw of the transmission. You will need to download the image with adobe. Look for the "Breakdown Illustration"
http://www.manualtransmissionpart.com/M5R1.html
That will give you an idea of what they are wanting and should answer your questions.
