I have teh 92 with 2.3l five speed its been gettin harder and harder to shift into first and then 2nd gear. well today while downshifting when it finally went into second the whole backend locked up. I slid till it stalled and when i started truck back up(after realizing i wasnt pudding from the huge f150 behind me) i had it in neutral and let the clutch out and it rolled....Its in first gear!!!!so at least i made it home, very slowly. but wtf!!!! It will eventually go into the othre gears and always into reverse but being stuck in first has it stalling out when i let the clutch out. Which tells me that when i finally get it into another gear that gear and first gear are working against each other. I took the shifter assembly off and the tranny was red hot, im thinkin fluid is burnt or gone (i havent checked as ive only had the truck a couple weeks, the guy before me changed all belts gaskets tires etc. so i assumed that they at least looked at the tranny fluid. yes i said assume ass+u+me= get it? anyways, Im not doing nothing to it till I find a starting point, Its hydraulic clutch and i know nothing about trannies, except how to change clutches. I really need some help, my 450 dollar truck isnt looking so nice anymore.

I did wax and polish the hood tho, has nice paint.:icon_bounceblue:

I am amazed that your tranny didnt blow up when you got it locked into two gears while moving.

Given what kind of stress was put on that tranny and what the fluid looked like, I would recommend a junkyard tranny.

At this point, your clutch is probably fine. I recommend a new clutch and slave cylinder though if you do drop a different tranny in it.

one response thats it? a local guy here mentioned teh keepers being gone?

I can't imagine what would break inside a mazda trans to leave it stuck in 1st gear.

4th? Yeah, happens all the time.
3rd? once or twice.

But first?

I'd love to look inside that one

But not enough to drive to florida
OR pay to have it shipped here.

I'm curious but not THAT curious.

Take it apart and tell us what you find...

I'm probably as well versed on those transmissions as anyone and
that's one I haven't heard of.

BTW, Tim is absolutely right, People are out doing "stuff"
rather than sitting at their computer.

I spent all day saturday re-engineering the lid on my "toolbox"

And today running a load of aluminum scrap.

Now I'm working on an in-the-bed tire carrier
to mount a tire securely against the drivers side
bedside BEHIND the wheel hump.

I wish i had the free time or a job that allowed me to be outside. I get online at work or in the evenings. either way a buddy says its the keepers, he also said he had one fo these trannys in his truck and pulled the top half of the keeper and left it out, ran it for 300k. I was gonna try that but i cant get the damn thing outta teh truck, the crossmember that supports teh tranny mount is too high and i turn the tranny enough to wiggle it out. I tried to pull the bolt for the crossmember but it wont come more than half way and i have absolutely no leverage, Also im not sure how to disconnect the slave cylinder hose as im having an issue with that too. any ideas are welcome

I'm mildly curious what your buddy thinks a "keeper" is.

I've only seen those in the context of valve springs, fish, and females.

LOL fish...thats funny. Im thinkin he's refering to whatever little metal piece seperates gears, I have no idea, and until i dig into my tranny and start pulling various unnamed parts, i dont think ill ever know.

For the slave, you have to push that little white collar in as much as you can. It also helps to try to push the line into the slave as your trying to disconnect it.

Getting the tranny out with out dropping the crossmember is not really an option. Work from the side and use a punch and hammer to drive the bolts out or pull on the bolt as you keep turning it backwards to screw it out.

The latter option wasnt working, I dont have a punch. I guess it has to wait till I can borrow one. The slave cylinder info is helpful, thank you.

NOW, apparently I must reiterate for a very few people the details of this problem, seeing as how you cant read (I dont see the one im referring to has posted yet. its probably best) My truck has 188k miles, I bought for 450 bux, when i bought it engine ran rough. now it runs fine, minus a spark problem which should be fixed with a new coil. I dont know about the History prior to my ownership(all of three weeks) however, I can tell you that since ive had the truck it hasnt been run into the ground, I havent beat on it, i didnt go jumping sanddunes with pizza cutters and stock suspension....... I drove it 7 miles to work and home again and nowhere else. The tranny started gettin harder and harder to shift into first gear then it started with second, almost like synchros were goin out, only without the grinding noises. Then BAM!!! downshifting to second gear coming to a light(letting the clutch out slowly, rpms never went over 2500) and the back tires locked up. I started teh truck and its stuck in first gear. with the shifter in neutral i can release the clutch and roll up to 25 mph, if i put the shifter in 2-5th gears and reverse it stalls, and it wont go into first position no matter what.

I'm gonna throw this out there too, i understand some responses have to be point blank, and then theres other responses that make the poster come out lookin like an a$$hole. This is unneccessary, if you dont have a productive answer and cant type it without emotion just stay quiet.

This is my thread and thats the way i'd like it, please.:nono:

How much play was there in your shifter? sometimes the bushings wear out and perhaps something funny could have happened with that?

It doesnt matter much anyway because the tranny has to come out before you can do anything else.

When you say play i dont know exactly how you mean it. In gear it would move around a bit but no more than any other 5 spd truck ive driven, in neutral it moved around quite a bit,:dntknw: now that its stuck in gear I cant move the shifter anywhere except first gear position. One thing i didnt check was whether or not the shifter thing at the base of the handle popped out of its little slot and left the tranny in first, but then why would i be able to put it in reverse, so nevermind. Is there a part that keeps gears seperated from eachother or from wobbling on the shaft its mounted on? maybe thats what he meant by keepers? I'll ask him again here in a minute.

::edit:: Ok so i looked up the parts list for our trannys on the tech page, (shoulda done that a week ago) the part my friend has so sourly misnamed is part 56 on the m50d-r1 diagram, (toyo-kogyo mazda transmission for the 88-98 ranger) its the first- second gear shift fork that he is referring too. Apparently there is a pin that shears off and gets caught up in the gears, he removed the pin and left the shift fork as partial as it was (bein a beater truck and all) so this is the fix he was referring too.

OK, I GOT MY TRANNY COMPLETELY DISMOUNTED AND HAD IT SOLELY ON THE JACK.....AND THE JACK IS BROKE AND WONT DROP. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sO i GOT P.O.ED AND DECIDED ILL TRY AGAIN LATER. ITS ABOUT 14 INCHES FROM(sorry caps) the top of the jack to the ground, will it hurt the tranny if i just knock it off the jack,? i mean it aint working anyways. I can always find another way to get it back in the truck, but i need it out.

Tranny will be fine if it drops 14 inches to the ground. You wont be if your between it and the ground though.....

I dont plan to be, last question, how much does it weigh? 80lbs.? 150lbs?

;missingteeth;<----forgot to move outt the way(the smiley face guy not meLOL)
