tranny stuck in first

sounds like to me it ran out of fluid and welded the input shaft to the mainshaft. which means its stuck in 4th, and when you put it in another gear, its in 2 gears at once. if thats the case, its done

MINES NOT STUCK IN 4TH, ITS STUCK IN 1ST. I CAN DRIVE DOWN TEH ROAD AND RPM'S RELINE AROUND 25 MPH(DONT HAVE A TACH) i WAS SLOWING AT A LIGHT PUT IT IN SECOND AND LIGHT TURNED GREEN STARTED TO APPLY GAS AGAIN WHILE LETTING OUT CLUTCH, THE SHIFTER STUCK AND WHEN IT FINALLY WENT INTO 2ND THE WHOLE REAREND LOCKED UP. THING IS I WAS DOWNSHIFTING AND NEVER SHIFTED INTO FIRST. IM THINKIN THAT WHEN IT LOCKED UP AND STALLED, FIRST GEAR WAS THE FIRST GEAR I GOT IT INTO. AND THATS WHERE IT STAYED (SORRY BOUT CAPS, IM AT WORK ITS EASIER)

The transmission alone weighs around 80 lbs empty for 4WD. It may be somewhat different for 2WD (though I don't think so).

could be something simple. problem is youll probably have to take it all apatr to fix it. same thing applies to what i said though. still could be an out of fluid, seizing problem. trannies dont just go into gear unless a shift fork makes it happen. unless a gear welds to the shaft

the shift forks is what im trying to get it apart to look at. i think one of the pins sheared off and got jammed between the gears we'll find out whenever i can get back out there.

I have never even ONCE seen someone break the roll pins that retain the shift forks
on the shift rails, NEVER.

I have never seena "broken" fork, never, not even once.

I HAVE seen, about a dozen times, a shift fork worn on one side or the other
(once BOTH) to the point where it wouldn't shift INTO a gear, but never to the point where it couldn't be shifted out.

What I have seen, and rarely DO NOT see, is worn shifter pivot bushings
that allow the "ball" at the bottom of the shift lever to float to the point where the "finger" below the ball will slip out of the "Gate" in the shift rail ends and thus not be able to pull the trans out of gear.

I have also seen several transmissions where it was driven so long in this condition
that the shifter hole in the top cover and the "finger" itself were so work that they were only repairable by melting them and starting over.

just because it hasnt been seen dont mean it aint happened. Like I said, im basing my diagnosis on a friends exerience, just like i base alot of things onyalls experience, besides, if it wasnt for first time wierd things we wouldnt have anything to post about.

now for my other question, for the life of me i cant get the *&^% slave cylinder tube loose from the tranny, i read inteh tech forum that its a quick release like an airhose, bit it wont move for nothing and theres no bolt or anything.

Don't quote your friend again.

You are comming dangerously close to being "guilty by association"
with his obvious need for one of Bill Envall's signs.

as for my not having seen it?
I haven't seen flaming monkeys flying out of anyone's butt,
but I try to keep an open mind....

another possibility I didn't mention is that there are two different shifter "Stub levers"
(pivot ball and "finger") and the shorter one will "sorta" work
but can easily slip over and out of an engaged gate and describe a shifter screw-up
like you are experiencing.

The dry break connector that connects the clutch line to the slave cylinder
is released by pushing in the white plastic collar.

yes, it's sorta like an air coupler fitting but BOTH sides seal when it disconnects.

Inside there are several inward pointing stainless steel fingers that
must be pried outwards by that collar, PULLING on the line while you
are doing it makes it impossible to release the fingers.
Pushing INWARDS slightly while you try to push the collar in
(it needs to go just slightly below "flush" with the female portion of the connector.

It is a bitch to release but it beats the hell out of bleeding the clutch
with the master bolted to the firewall.

OK, now we're getting somewhere, thats an explanation that should be in the tech library. i couldnt find anything about that part in the whole place.

As far as 'my buddy' I can't argue with the guy, his was an 83 ranger, which i think might be a different transmission, but when someone says they had the same problem and managed to fix it, and noone else comes up with a viable answer then i tend to listen. Until i prove them wrong, then i go tell him hes an idiot later. But for now, noone else on the whole board has ever even heard of my problem,

the stub levers sound like they are a possiblity too, ill have to check both. With my luck tho the gear IS welded to teh mainshaft and the housing.

Alright, allenD got some rep. Thanks for the detailed instructions on the clutch line, the tranny is finally out and now i can start troubleshooting the dang thing. theres two others in here getting some rep. as well. (what little I can offer) hopefully within two weeks I can actually get a fix posted up and figure out whats wrong

metalmacguyver gets teh other rep points, He also put some good answers out there and got my thread some attention that really contributed to me gettin as far as i did, without it the tranny would still be in the truck. It may be a simple job for some of you(dropping a tranny) but for me it was a task, especially as im working on the ground with hand tools and no power whatsoever.

Yeah the first time is always the hardest.

Now if you need pictures when your going and trouble shooting the tranny just let me know as I have a spare kicking around and definately want to be in on this diagnosis.

When you pull the top cover, take a picture of the tranny before you do anything else and post it up on here.

is it done yet

OK not even close to done, metal I have some pics, not the best some are foggy but i dont have anyplace to host tehm. Im gonna email them to you, would you post tehm for me? Also the most important pic i think is the busted ring, its looks kinda like springsteel. theres a 1-2 shift fork that is located in teh tailshaft away from the other two shift forks, and the ring was in there, also theres some thin ring gear looking things made of what looks to be brass. that arent exactly lined up, hopefully the pics open up some new doors. If you want to be emailed the pics guys instead of them being posted email me. feellnfroggy@aol.com

Here they are. I dont know what I am really looking at sooooooo, Allen?
