Well here's a head scratcher for you. I have a 2001 B-3000 3.0 auto trans. Rebuilt the engine which fired up on the first try put it in gear and nothing. No noise, no movement at all. I was given the truck and the guy that gave it to me said he was driving when he heard a loud noise coming from the motor so he pulled over and shut it off. Never fired it up after that. Sat for a total of two years. How can a tranny go bad sitting????? :icon_confused:

Did you properly reseat the converter after engine removal?

I think so. Pulled the engine and rebuilt it. Went to put it back in and couldn't get the converter to seat properly so as to allow bolting the trans to the engine. Pulled the trans and married the two out of the truck and re-installed. With the converter mis-aligned there is no way to marry the two. once out of the truck I could feel it seat and the engine and trans went together easy as pie. I have had it suggested that I should have filled the converter before install. I thought that would be done internally. Next stop, Transmission shop. Obviously it's something I did since it was working before I just don't know what I screwed up. :icon_confused:

My guess would be that in the first attempt to install engine you tried a bit too hard to get block and bell housing to mate, this broke the Front Pump(main pump) so damage was done.

Many DIYers go thru this on their first automatic, it is a hard mistake, and does require complete trans disassembly to install a new pump.

Torque converter has splines and slots that need to line up and engage the front pump inside the trans, when you install the torque converter you need to spin it while pushing in on it, you will feel and hear it click and slide in a bit, you need to feel/hear 2 or 3 slide ins for full engagement.
Without a working front pump trans has no pressure to engage any gear

Yep I'm guessing the same thing. It's off to the transmission shop today. Luckily for me I have been using the same shop for over ten years and two trucks. Guy is honest and his work is excellent. I'm starting to feel lighter in the wallet area already. :damnit1:

Tranny Update

Well I could lie and say it was toast when I got it but it looks like I killed the transmission myself. A very expensive lesson learned. Damn I love manual transmissions. So simple. On the other hand the engine is absolutely perfect. First engine I ever rebuilt that started on the first try no issues what so ever. So there's that. :icon_thumby:
