ok guys... here's the deal.

i need to tow this car:

with this truck:

with a tow bar. i have a ball on the rear bumper of my 1989 XLT 2.9L V6 (5SPD) with no tow package. just the ball hitch.

the car is a rolling chassis.... with the bumper off... just the 2 bumper mounts.

is there anything else - besides and chain to re-inforce the tow bar needed?

i need to tow this about 25-28 miles to a scrap yard to scrap this sucker...

hopefully i dont get pulled over! hahaha....

thanks!

many charities pick up non running cars for free and sell the parts for scrap. check around your area

well i've donated 2 cars already - and this time i want to cash in on a little bit of it. plus this has no tittle either.

good luck then, I have yet to see any legit wrecking yard take a car without a title (it could be stolen) you will need to get a title before you can scrap it and be lucky then to get anything for it

i'm picking it up from an abandoned/foreclosed house - and i know the guy at the salvage place. i would have them pick i up... but they go thru a 3rd party towing company.

so back to the topic....

put the rolling chassis in neutral and wire up the towing stop/tail lights?

I wouldn't tow jack with the stock bumper. Especially on a truck that has 21 years of rust on the tiny brackets used to hold the bumper on.

If you plan on bolting the towbar onto thos square frame horns, don't!

One, the angle would be too great for the bar, and two they are made to be smashed inwards, not pulled out on.

well its a solid A-frame bar.... so the "arms" can't be adjusted.

looks like i'll have to rent a 2-wheel dolly at U-haul or something.

Find someone who works at a hitch place or have your hookup at the JY get you a hitch. I snagged a class III/IV Reese/Drawtite receiver with a draw bar and it cost me $65 for both brand spanking new from the factory. My friend works at Drawtite :) I had him looking up 2 brake controllers and a wiring harness for one and he quoted me $54 for both controllers and the harness. The cheapest I could find the cheaper of the 2 controllers in the stores was $80-90. Also if someone hits you, that's less damage they can do to your truck after a hitch in installed (been there).

Use that van.

In Indiana you need a title for a salvage yard to accept it. To take it to the scrap metal yard, you don't need anything at all. They just want to frame (or sub-frames) seperate from the body because the body goes through the shredder and the frame (or subframes) go through the chopper.

As to towing--I will recommend you don't. A dolly would be possible. Not a tow bar.

I would just call someone to come get it. Not worth the liability incurred towing it unsafely. Not to me anyway. Maybe to you it is. If so, make sure you have the actual frame of that car connected with a chain to the actual frame of your truck. Try it and make sure the car is following your truck. There is a lot of resistance in a steering box when you are using it backwards and the car isn't going to want to follow the truck using a tow bar. That is why a dolly is so much better. The dolly has a baseplate that readily spins. A tow bar is better used for a motorhome pulling a Geo Trakker.

So you are stealing a car from an abandoned property and selling it to a salvage yard? What is your interest in the car or property?

if you have to rent dolly, by the time your done the $$$ might not be worth the hassle. .02

Cut the car up for scrap.

Load in bed of Ranger.

Haul to salvage yard.

Problem solved.

If it is more than 50% of the car they will require a title, that is to stop theft rings

ok i tracked down the tittle. turns out its a CA car...?

i'm just clearing up an abandoned/forclosed house. not professoinally or anything... just for some extra $$$

Ok do to MVD and have it titled in your name then rent the dolly plus gas.........should set you back about 150.00 total. the car is worth 50.00 in salvage....Id say go for it!:icon_thumby:
