My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
Left work to go on lunch, a dog ran out infront of me running from right to left, there was kids in the yard and i didnt wanna smoke there dog in front of them, i swerved (to the right) to miss the dog, went into a ditch, seen a guardrail coming at me head on, swrved back onto the road and my rear end musta slid in the dirt cause it smoked the guardrail, hooked itself on it, slid the pass side front of the truck and smashed it into the concrete barrier, took the whole truck and flung it sideways (on 2 wheels) and put her backwards into a ditch.

The pass side boxside looks like someone peeled it back with a can opener, it ripped the rear end out of it (litrally), bent the frame, it screwed it up beyond repair. I was doing 55-60 :bawling:

So i ;guess im in the market for a new truck...

later,
Dustin

dude thats some bad mojo u got around. glad ur safe

i would be pissed at that damn dog

You need to take the attitude truck drivers have to have. You don't swerve unless there are little kids to hit.

A dog is no where worth totaling a truck and risking YOUR life for. It is a dog, that's it. My first trainer was the one that got me into the habit of "unless it's a little kid, you DON'T swerve. Hit your brakes and slow down as much as you can safely". He was one of the safety officers at that company too. His one rule during the 2 - 3 weeks of training (in cab) was "Scratch my truck and you fail!". Pretty straight forward rule, he taught me A LOT about not only how to handle a 40+ ton rig but, also daily defensive driving. So much so that my wife scares the heck out of me when she drives. LOL

Glad to hear that you are safe and unscathed too.

if u have a shotgun, take it down to the dog, lol.
but didnt your ranger just die a little while ago to?

o and glad your safe

Damn two trucks in a month? That sucks, man. Glad you are okay. "Never swerve to hit or miss wildlife".

Yeah, I never swerve. My older brother swerved when we were kids and ran over a little boy. That was about the worst thing in the world. Even my wife doesn't swerve. She hit a dog hard enough to bend the blocker beam on her car. When I was a kid my dog got run over in front of me. The guy tried to stop, I heard the screech and thump. I didn't blame them, I blamed myself.

Can't really say that you did right or wrong. But if it was me, I would have the brakes locked up in a straight line.

On a side story. I did one time have a dog jump out of a truck bed while I was cruising in the opposite lane. Even then, I locked the brakes and pulled the car just slightly off to the right before coming to a stop. I believe I didn't hit the dog, but the dog was dieing anyways from the impact of hitting the road at 40mph.

that bites . looking for a 87 f150 4x4 ? got one for sale in bull shoals ar.$850.00
surface rust only .

That sucks, man. It's good that you're fine, though, and it was thoughtful of you to not hit the dog, but like already said it would have probably been best to just jam on the brakes and see what would've happened.

Damn, your luck with trucks lately just plain sucks!

I can understand when making a split second decision to swerve instead of plowing into the dog. Once that decision is made, theres no time to do otherwise. For a lot of people it would simply be a natural reaction to try to not hit the obstacle in the road.
I've had the misfortune of killing 3 dogs with my past vehicles. On everyone of them I hit the brakes and tried to get around it the best I could without endangering myself or others on the road or on the side of the road. Yeah I felt pretty bad for the dogs and the owners. It sucks to have to knock on a strangers door and tell them the news. Sucks even worse when they see it happen.

Like I said its a split second decision, coulda woulda shoulda ya' know? I agree with some of the other posters though, I'll plow the dog, deer, or whatever animal if it means endangering myself or others.
