Tottalled my F150 :(

You need to take the attitude truck drivers have to have. You don't swerve unless there are little kids to hit.

A dog is no where worth totaling a truck and risking YOUR life for. It is a dog, that's it. My first trainer was the one that got me into the habit of "unless it's a little kid, you DON'T swerve. Hit your brakes and slow down as much as you can safely". He was one of the safety officers at that company too. His one rule during the 2 - 3 weeks of training (in cab) was "Scratch my truck and you fail!". Pretty straight forward rule, he taught me A LOT about not only how to handle a 40+ ton rig but, also daily defensive driving. So much so that my wife scares the heck out of me when she drives. LOL

Glad to hear that you are safe and unscathed too.

Exactly. I won't swerve for anything. You never know what you may hit by swerving, or worse.

My trainer told me the same thing. No matter what's in the road you just hit the brakes and prepare for the impact.

Too bad about the truck. In NY the owners would be liable.

I hit one 2 years ago and my friend who is an attorney told me about it. Sure enough, Allstate made them pay for the damages since the dog should have been leashed.

Your trainer has never gone up against a moose. seen a moose destroy a schneider cab over about 12 years ago in maine.

btw ..... what is this trainer you guys speak of? The old man taught me in a 81 Kenworth cab over with a V8 cat and a 6x4 with a 2spd splitter.

I know where there is a 97 F150 for $2500......

I would take it as a sign...

Now you have a donor for Rusty!!!!!!

:D

My trainer had just gone up against a Dodge Ram a few weeks earlier. It totalled his truck in a head on. I don't care what is in the road, the truck is insured. You NEVER LEAVE THE ROAD for anything.

I agree......... but after seeing what a moose can do the median looks softer.

Oh it is. But it's cheaper to hit that moose and mess up the truck than ruin a reefer full of meat by rolling the trailer over. I hauled million dollar loads more than once.

tellin ya ...... you hit a moose and you are not walking away..... well maybe with your T660 you might be flown out, but in a cab over you are leaving in a corner's van..... the load is insured. its a judgment thing, personally I'll trade 1/2 an hour on the phone with the insurance company over 2 or 3 months in the hospital.

I was driving Northern Ontario. Loads of moose, deer, wolves, and other wildlife. You either have rock face or forest to swerve in to. I'll take the animal and let the Freightshaker or Volvo take the hit.

Then again, I've seen a turnpike double on the prairies smoke a wolf at 100 kph. Never swerved or hit the brakes. Just kept on keeping on. Talk about seeing the pink mist. LOL

The trainer was uninjured when he went head-on with the Dodge. I hit a bear once, it dented the bumper and cracked the fascia. A deer that I got did nearly nothing. Believe it or not, you are sitting too high in the big trucks for a moose to injure you unless its a fluke.

Here is what happens when a Chevy pickup fights with a moose. Looks survivable.

Those don't have your head at 10'6" off the ground either.

I wasn't referring to people driving a rig. I was referring to moose in general.

Basically any animal can cause a fatal accident. It all depends on how it was hit.

I have a friend who got hit in the face with a turkey. Ended up in the hospital.

These don't.

That is a whitetail deer, hitting one is kind of a right of passage for a midwesterner. Normally it is just a little bit of front end damage... unless the jump at the last minute and land in your lap like that one did to a Durango (or gets thrown at you by a semi)

I have a friend who got hit in the face with a turkey. Ended up in the hospital.

My dad hit two turkeys with his one ton hauling a tractor, one hit the bumper and went under the truck, hit both axles on the truck before exiting and contending with the 3 axles on the trailer. The other glanced off of the bumper and seemed to explode in mid air.

Since all they hit was the steel bumper and drivetrain components there was no damage to truck, but dad was sure he at least lost a headlight until he got there... it sounded terrible when they hit.
