To all Mechanics

I'm not sure what everyone's bitching about.

I've never worked on a carb, with the exception of my lawnmower and chainsaw. That's messed up right there. I've been wrenching for almost 15 years too.

No idea on how to work on carbs, but I can make my ford stand up and talk. (it's running a ~91 MAF system on my 351)

the damn thing runs perfect. works like a charm.

Whereas my 93 ranger apparently has a massive vacumn leak at the moment (engine shakes, no codes, smooth idle) from when I changed the head gasket.

there are good things and bad things in every system. Bitching about them doesn't change anything. Not using the benefits of any one system makes you a dumbass.

And parts changers are the reason I've done everything on all of my vehicles.

Also, People who don't know anything about carbs or how to tune then shouldn't go around saying that they are worthless but, They do.

NYS has no emissions inspections on vehicles older than 1996. Mazda as far as I know, has no vehicles running carbs (feedback or otherwise) built after 1996. You are not banned by the state to run your Weber. At least try to accurate or you kill your side of the debate.

That mazda was an 89. NYS emissions laws state that all original emissions components must be on the vehicle or it can't pass the visual. Due to the amout of modification to make the weber work (that stupid ass 3 hose air injection system, egr, evap, etc) it would not pass.

ALL NYS vehicles have to pass visual (except pre 73, or 72 or something that isn't still on the road here in the salt belt). Trust me, I researched this. Nobody would pass it. Given the amount of $$$ that would have gone into this project on a truck that was in less than stellar condition, with possible issues with inspection, it was deemed not worth it. This was around the same time that NYS started the bullshit '96 mandantory OBDII scanning in the whole state. Anybody who would have just passed me went out of business because they couldn't afford the NYS computer. (3 backyard shops that I used to goto went under).

I have brought these problems with this truck and NYS law regarding emissions (stock and otherwise) up several times in the past, don't accuse me of not being "accurate".

I have also been one of those people who don't think too highly of others who throw parts at a problem they don't understand. I DO understand how to deal with modern systems, and, as a result of working on them, would rather work on older systems (see genset example above). As a result I make some nice $$ on the side repairing obsolete equipment that has litle or no manufacturer support. Try getting an Cummins/Onan rep out to work on a J series or a CW series genset. :icon_rofl:

I know about them. I know how to tune them. I REALLY know how to tune them. I really know how they work. I actually like them and admire them for the ingenuity.

But they suck compared to electronic fuel injection. It's just a damned fact.

What pissed me off about the fights I get in around here is that people don't seem to understand that I can like something while at the same time see that it is inferior to something else. I love in-line sixes and 4-barrel carbed big-blocks. That's what I grew up with. I also grew up with the stones to accept and admire something better when I see it.

Everything just is what it is. A carb is just a bad way to mix fuel. I just got done digging 94' of trench with a shovel and mattocks when I own a backhoe. It was a bad way of doing it. But I love the feel of picks and shovels.

I've been a Wrench(I'm a Mechanic, not a"Tech") for 30 years.I'd much rather work on an EFI rig than a Carb. It's way simpler if you take the time to understand it.To weigh in on the original post. The shops I've worked for in the past are too dependant on speed, and it's hard to learn the right steps when your always being rushed to get the job done.It can be done, but it's hard.
And by the way you can get an MSD distributor and fuel injection for the flathead too!
