That is incorrect.
Moving from Louisiana to Texas shouldn't be bad. Texas is very reasonable and has low registration costs.
Louisiana on the other hand, does not recognize sales taxes paid to other states. The LA DMV interprets the law to be "you must have paid LA sales tax on the vehicle before you can register it and get plates". When I moved to Texas from Kansas, the costs were minimal - like $15 per car / motorcycle. When I moved to LA I with the same 2 cars and a motorcycle, the sales taxes LA charged me on the same 2 cars I already had, was over $2000. I didn't even attempt to register the motorcycle.

Regardless, he will have to pay Sales Tax to one state or the other. And some states are anal about it. In CA if you buy a vehicle in another state and move it to CA (depends upon how long you own the vehicle prior to moving to CA), CA will charge you the difference in Sales Tax between the purchase state and CA, if CA's is more. At 8.75% there are not many states with a higher Sales Tax.

BTW, I was stationed at North Fort in Ft Polk for a year as a draftee...a long time ago. Left South Fort via train to Oakland and unit movement to Vietnam - by ship.

I talked to a dealership here in town and the lady said that she deals with it all of the time. She said that what I need to do is buy the truck and don't pay the sales taxes in LA but when I go to register it here I will have to pay the sales tax

Nice truck... if anyone is interested--I just looked at that truck's twin here in Abilene (Tx) except its an '05 automatic with I think 55k miles for $11500.
