I have an 88 ranger, 2wd, 5 speed with 235/75/15 on 99 explorer wheels...i put them on the truck completely stock and the m50d as a whiner finally gave out...now that i have it in the barn and a project...i didn't notice much difference as far as power and whatnow with the bigger tires than before...how much loss of performance would i notice with 31X10.50X15? any at all? I just don't wanna go to big

I also have a 3 inch body lift now and leveling coils coming along with prothane body mounts:yahoo:

You'll never use 5th gear with those size meats on there. You'll also notice increased braking effort. The increase in unsprung weight will be quite noticeable.

Unless you regear or install at least 4.10s. 4.56 would be better but good luck finding that axle. You can get an upgrade to limited slip while you are at it.

IIRC, the 4wd 2.9 automatic trucks came stock with 4.10s. Crap shoot whether they have LS or not. My 90 did.

I had an 83 4wd 2.8 a long time ago. It was a dog with 30x9.5 mud tires, very noticeable. I ended up putting 235-15s on it for the boy to wear out.

I mean I want the explorer ls axle but I don't wanna get terrible gas mileage and in all reality, 31x10.50s aren't much bigger than 235/75s. I used 5th fine with 235s on it.

You are not per say losing power from the engine. You are adding rolling resistance with the bigger tires. The addition of a taller gear to the rear end would benefit you greatly. Look for an explorer with a 4.10 gear you should be fine with that.

That makes more sense. I'll have to go the junkyard now. I seen a chart on this website that tells what explorers had what rear ends.
