Timing Belt Cover Issue

I was gifted a 1994 Ford Ranger Splash with a messed up engine. Dont know what was wrong with it but the guy that gifted it to me just didnt have time for it and knew i needed a vehicle and that i was willing to work and had time. (TMI?)

So I've just been putting stuff together and if something doesnt work THEN i will take it apart again and fix what i have a clue is wrong. So the latest thing i tried to put on after searching the web and getting from amazon was a timing belt cover. Problem was though that when i went to put the cover on THE CLIP HOLES DIDNT LINE UP. I've looked even more and cant find the cover that looks like the one in the chilton book. The only one I've found is a 50 dollar 2.3 MUSTANG Cover and even it doesnt look like the one in the book spot on. (by the way the cover i got was about 30 bucks) So i either dont use a cover, use this one and make it work, or luck up with a parts truck.

Or is the one i got correct but i dont know it. (if it is then why does it look like that!!! Lol.)

Please reply with anything you got to say, even if you wanna start a conversation about my tires lol. Preferable reply would be an answer about the cover though lol.

If you have the lima 2.3, things changed over time. The original cover was a flat plate. Held on with several 8mm bolts. Later models had part plastic, part metal, and the variety increased.
FWIW, the cover you get must match the mounting pan or brackets that are attached to the block.
I'd also like to see pictures, and a confirmation of the engine involved.

Hi Brian, Welcome to TRS~!

Is that the final product you have on there now? If so...it looks good and as long as it isn't rattling around it will do what it's supposed to do.

They can be mixed and matched as mentioned so as long as you have a few attachment bolts to hold it in it won't actually go anywhere or fly off too easily.

The 94 2.3 is the last year of the aux gear driven oil pumps but even the later models used a very similar cover. They replaced old style oil pump with one that sits where near the front on the driver side of the engine.

That means the 94 block can be used with a distributor on the old style ignition in case you want to go backwards or trade/sell the engine to someone with an older truck...

Might come into play some day...

Anyway...what is the frame and body like for rust and damage? Any pics of the entire truck or did you put those somewhere else?

Rust is minimal. mostly surface rust. Its a very nice truck. You can tell its been used by the stained interior, the cracked dash, the dents, the discolored paint, and the horrible interior repaint job. Lol. But stuff like seats and steering wheel and boot, looks stuff is good. Missing the console but its okay lol.

Had to rob a 96 XLT bed though, the fiberglass splash bed was badly damaged so it couldnt be repaired.

And if you were wondering, yes theres more work to be done. Just found out my right front tire is brake locked and both fronts need new pads. Should i list the rest of what i need? lol.

Sadly its a real project because im unemployed and 17. At home so im healthy but dont have money for the truck most times. Hope to get a nice job in september at fastenal though!! Cant wait to get it fixed up and drive. Need 5 speed lessons tho lol

Yes, sounds like you have your work cut out for you. The images showed up and the truck looks like a worthwhile project...spring hangers look solid from what I could see and they are a weak point.

Mostly could be cleaned up and decent looking with a bit of work...reminds me of my first project...

I noticed the Kart Life sticker as the only "location sensitive" information...Are you in Texas by any chance? Just curious...it's kind of a hobby from watching CSI to try to find out things from otherwise no obvious information like license plates or landmarks...

LOL...no...but the company is listed as being in Texas...of course my brilliant deduction was incorrect as per usual...they probably ship all over the world but I'd never seen their logo before.

keep deducing. even when wrong there will be times you are right. and sometimes deducing can save your life, money, or time or all at once

That's very true and why I never back down from a wild guess when all else fails. It has saved me plenty, including my sanity out of pure entertainment value at times.
