Tilting a truck on it's side? Is this safe way to work under vehicle?


Actually, doorgunner's first comment is closest to winning the safety lottery...it's called the "pit" and was the only way before lifts were common and affordable. And yes, they used to use ditch versions out in the sticks. My great grandfather quit wrenching when he started seeing V8's above him while in the pits...he liked inlines...learned to wrench in France as part of the AEF in WWI...We're off to kill the Kaiser!

I've thought several times about building myself a pit but that's all the farther I've got, so I'm stuck working with jack stands LOL.

I'm also thinking about building a dock style loading ramp so I can load/unload stuff from my truck easily, such as riding mowers, or ATV's.

Well, if you decide to do a pit, do it right. Check with your local county Extension guy to see what kind of soil/dirt you're working with. It's easy enough to dig one with a backhoe, but then you gotta shore it up inside before you use it and it's best to cover it unless you wanta work crotch-deep in rainwater and creep crawlies that come with standing water. We used to keep the home-made pit at granddad's covered with boards and tin...went out one-day to uncover and use it and it was holding a coupla snattle-rakes (prairie rattlers) and one very pissed off badger. He could almost climb out and was not happy, so getting close enough to the edge to use the shotgun was REAL interesting. The dogs just sat back and watched.
 
I just use pallets lol. Needed room to get my old exhaust out (the sawzall blades were all dull or broken)

I had thought about doing a pit before, but digging one around here would be kind of interesting with all the rocks so I was just going to build it up from the ground with concrete or railroad ties....

But yea, never got that far.

My 6-ton jackstands have been getting a lot of use this year though. I have a couple sawn chunks of hard sandstone that I set a pressure treated 2x10 on and set the jackstands on that. Works great and I don't have to worry about it cracking like a concrete block can with the wrong forces applied.
 
Thats certainly a neat trick - although 1700kg for the "bigger" one is barely enough for a stock truck, let alone something with a v8 or heavier axles or something.

I used to shore pieces of LNG hull with 40'+ Doug fir 12 x 12s Of course, they were bolted in a shaped shoe welded to the hull. The guy welding the gas tank could weld a shoe to frame and knock it off afterward. That would be the SAFE way

What would you say the safest "angle" of the vehicle would be for that? You know if you tilt it too far the truck would balance and could topple over, but a smaller angle would put more weight on your wedge poles and limit accessibility.

I would think around 50* sounds right?

1700kg = 3750lbs
Ranger xtra cab runs about 3300lbs

In most other places in the world...............cars and even utility trucks have always been smaller, high gas prices are new to us, and wide streets in cities are what we are used to.

So raising a vehicle on to 2 wheels to work on it is foreign to us, elsewhere it is not.
get a couple of buddies and flip the car up,
drive around Europe and you will see it everywhere.
Went to a few local races over there and the Pits were full of cars on there side, lol, that's just how they do it.
Have people been hurt............sure
Have people been hurt from jacks or jack stands falling or even industrial lifts.......of course, no place in the world has a monopoly on stupid, it transcends borders and race or religion
It's all about the safety you put into place

Getting up in the morning isn't safe, lol.

Are these guys doing this to work on daily drivers? That seems really stupid to me to tilt a car on it's side. You'll lose fluids, or put fluids in places you don't want them.

Of course, this could be a good solution to burping the cooling system on an RBV.

Damn, your pallets must be better than the pallets we get at work. No way would I trust those pallets. I have a set of old 10 hole wheels off of a Mustang that I put under the tires. It works out really nice.

If I need it.. I just go to Spyder Offroad and use the lift lol

usually I can do whatever I need under my B2 with no issues
