I pulled a gauge cluster from a 2002 Mazda truck to put on my 2001 Ranger XLT and assumed they were the exact same until I saw there was 1 resistor missing from factory on the back. I was hoping it was just design changes but my THEFT light isn’t blinking. Can I just solder the resistor onto this one or will I have to live without PATS? I really don’t want my truck to be stolen.

Gauge cluster I’m putting in is missing the 220ohm resistor to the right of the ant theft led.

I wanna start by saying, with my understanding of how the PATS system works, which my truck does not have, the light is just an indicator. Pretty sure the anti-theft function (namely not providing starter or fuel to the engine) will still work without the light working. You could test by taking off the steering wheel shroud, removing the ignition and turning the little square thing with a screwdriver or something, or you could remove the PATS module next to the ignition and reinstall the cylinder.

Anyway, as far as the non blinking light goes, I have tried my darndest to trace out the current path for the bulb, and I think I got it right.

I'm not sure if this is correct, so can you check the dash and verify? I also have no clue where the resistor goes, as it is obscured by glare.

I am not sure what type of bulb is in the anti-theft indicator specifically, but ford thought it was uber special and put it in a funky red socket. Would you be able to pull one of those out and attach a picture?

Thank you so much this is why I love forums. This is my daily driver so I had to throw the instrument cluster back in so I could drive it. I just threw my old one away so I’ll find a good pic of the same one. I think you are spot on because a wiring diagram I’m looking at for a Mazda truck for pin 9 is ground but doesn’t say on a ranger. I can link the Ranger one.
