I pulled a gauge cluster from a 2002 Mazda truck to put on my 2001 Ranger XLT and assumed they were the exact same until I saw there was 1 resistor missing from factory on the back. I was hoping it was just design changes but my THEFT light isn’t blinking. Can I just solder the resistor onto this one or will I have to live without PATS? I really don’t want my truck to be stolen.

Gauge cluster I’m putting in is missing the 220ohm resistor to the right of the ant theft led.

I wanna start by saying, with my understanding of how the PATS system works, which my truck does not have, the light is just an indicator. Pretty sure the anti-theft function (namely not providing starter or fuel to the engine) will still work without the light working. You could test by taking off the steering wheel shroud, removing the ignition and turning the little square thing with a screwdriver or something, or you could remove the PATS module next to the ignition and reinstall the cylinder.

Anyway, as far as the non blinking light goes, I have tried my darndest to trace out the current path for the bulb, and I think I got it right.

I'm not sure if this is correct, so can you check the dash and verify? I also have no clue where the resistor goes, as it is obscured by glare.

I am not sure what type of bulb is in the anti-theft indicator specifically, but ford thought it was uber special and put it in a funky red socket. Would you be able to pull one of those out and attach a picture?

Thank you so much this is why I love forums. This is my daily driver so I had to throw the instrument cluster back in so I could drive it. I just threw my old one away so I’ll find a good pic of the same one. I think you are spot on because a wiring diagram I’m looking at for a Mazda truck for pin 9 is ground but doesn’t say on a ranger. I can link the Ranger one.

Yes based on what I can see from the resistor, it looks like that plane is shared with other bulbs and gadgets, so it is likely a ground plane. I am trying to find the Mazda diagrams, because you might also have to flip the LED around since it will only work one direction. They may have flipped it in the Mazda already though I'm not sure... It'd be odd for them to use the same bulb housing with the same keying and flip it, because service centers could replace the bulb and see it not blink and think something else was wrong.

Also, from rewiring my instrument cluster, there's probably a spare ground wire already wired or something. Mine had the extra ground and signals for the tach cluster even though they were not used on mine, so I just had to move those pins around. If not, there may be an empty pin you could pull out and cut then connect to ground. Let me do some more searching.

Hmm from looking at your original cluster and the stock image you found, pin 9 does appear to be connected despite the wiring diagram suggesting otherwise. I can't trace it meeting up with another pin, and it goes to the illumination at the top (I think), So I would think it would be ground.

Also, I think I just confirmed my issue by using my brain for a second. The blue trace I did comes from pin 6. The green goes somewhere else. I believe on your truck the blue trace is active low and when it wants to blink the light it pulls it to ground for a second. On the new cluster that trace should be active high, but I am assuming the modules is the same. That would mean you'd need to move that pin over to position 9 on that connector. If you look closely on your pictures there is a '+' printed towards the bottom of the led on both, so that should be the positive.

Now, I'm not sure if you kept the resistor, but I think you would need it for proper lighting of the LED. I am assuming the Mazda had the resistor somewhere else, so you'll either need to add it back in or move it somewhere else. I think the easiest solution would be to cut the anti theft wire and solder it inline. It doesn't matter if it comes before or after the LED in the circuit so long as it is there.

TL;DR: I think the LED is backwards and you could either flip it or flip the wires. Also move the resistor inline.
