The cast iron thread

Nice, but do you pronounce it “I-Ron” or “I-Ern”? I recently heard someone pronounce it “I-Ron”... That was just strange.

Do you say WA-TER, WA-DER or WOOD-ER?

Wa-der.

I recently noticed my daughter say orange as or-ange... I’ve made a point to listen closely and it seems most people say ar-ange. (at least around here, it may be different in other parts of the country.)

I use to pronounce alot of words the "Jersey" way but forced my self to learn proper english after spending so much time in the south. I was gal dern tared of being called a dag gum yankee carpet bagger every time I ordered a glass of wooder with ma grits!

orenge around here, there is no kick up for the "a"

I am close enough to Missouri a little of the southern twange is around where words sort of get mushed but without the full blown southern thing.

I have a 10" skillet that I've owned for probably 25 years, a 12" round griddle, and a dutch oven, all Lodge. The dutch oven is great for making tomato sauce.

Best way to clean old rusty ones I've seen is to spray them good with oven cleaner, put it in a garbage bag and leave it in your basement or garage overnight, spray it again the next day and put it back in the bag, do it again for a third day, then scrub it clean.

I wash mine with regular dish soap, it doesn't hurt them, then heat it back up on the stove, spray it with Pam and wipe with a paper towel and let it cool down before I out it away.

I just went to my parents house and dug through our old camping gear, there are 3 iron skillets there that match mine. No name anywhere? Do yours have names cast into them or you just know the brand by looking at it?

I have an engraver. I could put names on mine.

Easy way to identify cast iron... is it marked with Made in USA or Made in Taiwan/China/Korea etc? If none, and it doesn't have a brand name, and looks old, it was probably made before the 50's/60's. Sometime in there the cast iron companies all started putting Made in USA on their pieces.

Any numbers or other text? Do they have heat rings on the bottom? Those are a raised ring on the bottom of the skillet. Sometimes you can identify them by the number of notches in the heat ring or lack of. The vast majority of old, unmarked cast iron with heat rings I've come across has ended up being Lodge but there are many other brands too.

Looks like a pot for melting lead to join old cast iron sewer/drain pipes.

Yea definitely a crucible.

That's a cool little piece. Plumbing comes to mind, although from my understanding a lot of plumbers used a burner with a lead pot attached to it and a dipper. Weird that it has a pour spout and that it's so thick - bet that guy was pretty heavy and awkward to pick up when full!

It's heavy and awkward to pickup empty, with my hands, forget full of lead and using tongs.
