Testing speakers ?

I cleaned out my bosses metal bin, and salvaged an 8" Volvo speaker. It looks ok. I can push the coil? in and out with no binding. Is the only way to truly test it to hook it to a system? I'm not an audiophile, but if I can add a bit to one of my cars I wouldn't mind. Its something I've never played with...

Car audio drivers are most commonly 4 ohms while home audio will be 6-8 ohms. For a brief, low amplitude test just hook up the leads, observing proper polarity, to either a vehicle's speaker wire or a home sound system's speaker wires.

You will get 1 of 3 results:
1) nothing, no bueno
2) an unpleasant belch or buzz, no bueno
3) sound, GTG

Ohm the coil with a multimeter. An open, or infinity reading, tells you that the coil is open; has a break in the wire and is no good.

And if it's good, the reading will tell you what ohm rating the speaker is. No guessing.

If the cone does move freely, chances are that the speaker is good; just hook it up to a source to find out.

I bet that ABBA sounds really good on a Volvo speaker . . . . .
