Terrys 88 Bronco2 Restore

IMG_3785.jpeg

Use a T15 to remove glove box. Some signs of why lever is not working. It gets worse
IMG_3789.jpeg

8mm to get 3 screws off of front of heater core and 2 more in the back. Remove cover. Already signs of a mouse making a home in here at one time. No idea how pencil was in there.
IMG_3792.jpeg

Remove hoses under the hood and work core thru carefully and not spill fluid inside.
IMG_3791.jpeg

I removed my Air Filter Bix and the 3 screws to get blower motor out. More debris. This is why my lever is not moving. Seen it on the Ranger. Will order a new Heater Core.

Hello RobbyeD. I did have to work it just a little to get tilt to lock. I will look more into it. I thought I might have just not got it pulled correctly. Thanks. I will pay attention to that next time I work it.

I stick a vacuum cleaner in the passenger compartment and an air gun thru blower motor. You could rip out screen but I don’t jury rig. Between air gun and vacuum cleaner just work both sides.
IMG_3793.jpeg

More trash from core area.
IMG_3794.jpeg

Vacuum Cleaner inside.
IMG_3796.jpeg

I had to use needle nose pliers to pull some trash.
IMG_3797.jpeg

Lower left lever freed. Yea!!!
IMG_3798.jpeg

Two 8 mm bolts. Remove blower resistor and get more debris. Mine is in great shape but get these out if bone yard when possible. Not even sure they are available from part store.

IMG_3799.jpeg

You may not be able to tell in picture but there is a lot of mud built up in each blade.
IMG_3800.jpeg

I took the air gun and cleaned each blade. What a dust storm.
IMG_3801.jpeg

I hope to extend blower motor life and blew what dust I can out if motor. The brushes do wear done and create dust.

IMG_3802.jpeg

Thus is an aftermarket blower. The rubber tube should connect to the blower and also connector is not factory
IMG_3804.jpeg

Here is factory. No big deal. Factory actually runs dust back into system.

I just ordered a heater core and driver window motor. I can hear it run but nothing. Cheap enough from rock auto so will just replace it. Passenger side not working. I will look into it later. No one still around to pump brakes to find leak so I guess I will get onto valve covers and then plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Break is over, I had another cup of coffee. so excuses are done. Back at it. Still a couple of wins. Windshield pump motor now works, front brakes will work, and trash removed form blower that the lever is working.

IMG_3810.jpeg

Trying to get AC Compressor took way to long. There has to be an easier way.
IMG_3806.jpeg

Instead of getting frustrated I go for a simple accomplishment. Usually a solid brass sensor just needs cleaned and doesn’t need replaced but as cheap enough I will probably replace at a later time.
IMG_3807.jpeg

A 17mm deep well works great.
IMG_3808.jpeg

Cleaned with a wire brush.

IMG_3811.jpeg

Since I am not going to get valve covers replaced today, I will go with flushing the cooling system. Since I got the heater core pulled, I just looped it around back to water pump.
IMG_3812.jpeg

Mostly a reference picture for me to remember the direction of thermostat.
IMG_3813.jpeg

Nasty. Can’t even get the seal off. It was replaced before. I am leaving thermostat out to flush cooling system. Truck starts really quick.

IMG_3814.jpeg

Wife got home. Had her to pump brakes. Found leak real quick. Pin hole in metal line. Took line off if the gold 88 and got it fixed.
IMG_3817.jpeg

Yummy. Starting to flush cooling system.
IMG_3819.jpeg

Cleaned shop. First time of driving it. Still difficult to move. Thinking/ hoping rear brakes. Acts like parking brake is on. 3rd flush is still nasty. Ranger in the back ground.

Next is to look at rear brakes, try to get to valve covers, tune up and more flushing. Not getting brake fluid to drivers front caliper or passenger rear slave cylinder. I started to remove the connecd of a daytions and blow air thru the lines. Guess I should of. Previous owner has replaced fuel tank and both pumps. Fuel system is one of my first task but he did it already for me. I got some fixes done so not too bad of a day. I am not as fast as I used to be. Would starve as a mecahnic. I am beat and feeling the aches and pains but happy with what I got done today. Parts will have to wait until next week but there is always cleaning of something when funds are low.

My '84 2.8 got nasty like that. It took me several weeks, and a bunch of plain water flushes, to get it to clear. I'd fill it up, do a work run and then drain and repeat after I got home.

To drain the system I like popping off the lower radiator hose; you get more of a "flush" action than the lame dribble through the petcock that way.

I also use more plain water and go easy on the harsh chemical flushes. The freeze plugs pit from the inside, and I've had them start weeping after treating with the chemicals.

Thanks RobbieD. Something I had not thought of. You are right. A corroded freeze plug can be a pain. I had one to go bad and fix was not hard, getting to it I had to pull the motor. I really don’t want to pull the motor.

I was researching electric window motors and seen you posted in 2007. You have been around for quite some time. Congrats.

I will post details on my builds and try to be of help so if someone needs info on how to fix things they can refer to my threads on what is involved. Some things just are not on YouTube or a manual. I still need to figure out how to get around the site.

I have never seen helper springs like these before. It is an add on. These to carry more weight for towing?

IMG_3820.jpeg
I left the shop last night concerned I had a bigger issue ahead of me. Luckily I think it was just the passenger brake holding the truck down. Drivers hub looks ok. I eventually will do a complete brake rebuild. Right now I need it movable around the house.
IMG_3821.jpeg

Passenger side has pad missing and thinking/hoping this was binding axle.
IMG_3822.jpeg

I am having to charge battery as it is a refurb and quit cranking. While looking at connections, I found this. Thinking someone just did not remove old cable. I just ordered a factory ground cable from partsgeek. I will eventually go thru all grounds. Might do that while battery is charging.

Those do increase the load carry ability. They work. I had them on my 2011 Ranger for a while before I upgraded to heavier leaf springs. I wouldn't use them to increase towing capacity. The loading is different and you still have the same brakes. The abilty to go rarely is a problem when towing. Stopping on the, other hand, is a different story.
