Terrys 88 Bronco2 Restore

IMG_3873.jpeg

Thanks @Uncle Gump for catching the green spring other side was tweaked as well. I hit the white ones. I have the brake tools, not pictured but I also have the lever adjust tools. Shop needs all tools put back up. It’s around here somewhere. I had 3 hours trying to do this myself. A friend helped me get this done. I don’t know how I did it but I bent the hook on the adjuster. When I went to straighten it out, it broke. I do want to learn these. Just some reason I struggle with them. When I figure it out I am going to be one happy camper. I even had my laptop sitting beside me.
I did see a video where a guy basically assembled them off of the truck. I could not find that video to save my life when I went to do it. Thanks for catching the spring issue.

I got my heater core from rock auto. A little thinner then stock but should work. Lady one I got from Orielly was a little thicker and a tight fit for the Ranger but it works. When I find the correct core. I am making a note of it in my thread.

Got my new window motor in the mail. Probably just needed the gear on the old one but just got complete assembly.

May not show in picture. In reverse, no tire movement. Goes forward ok but not like it should. I have to rev to 2500-3000 rpm to get moving and trans smells hot. I am wondering if Torque Converter could cause this. I will change fluid and filter in hopes of maybe that fixing it but not holding my breath.

Any suggestions. Front drive shaft is disconnected. Rear end is fine and brakes are not the issue.

If you drop the pan... the story will likely be told.

@Uncle Gump If it was slipping, I would think transmission. It engages like it should going into forward and reverse. just acts like brakes are holding it when in reverse, instantly rolls forward. Pan will be coming off and see what surpises I may have. I am not really thinking filter will fix it but you never know. Better then what could be needing. If a transmission rebuild is needed, it will get done.

There are band adjustments i belive...

Might want to check that too.

@lil_Blue_Ford might be able to elaborate on the band adjustments.

So…

Does the rear spin freely forward and back with it off the ground and the trans/transfer case in neutral?

Torque converter failure can cause a lack of power transfer to the transmission from the motor.

Loose /failed bands or problems in the transmission itself can also cause a variety of problems. What color is the transmission fluid? Does it smell burnt?

Only bands 2 and 3 are adjustable. There’s a procedure in the tech archives on here about it. The #1 band is controlled entirely by hydraulic pressure through the reverse servo, which is why reverse is usually the first to go. If the transmission itself isn’t toast, you may be able to get away with new O-rings and gasket on the reverse servo if that’s the problem. Try to get square cut o-rings if you can, those are the “upgrade” component. Also if you’re gonna mess around in the valve body I highly recommend at least a TransGo shift kit.

Thanks @lil_Blue_Ford I tried looking into it. Also had a friend to see if he knew anything about adjusting bands. We both come to the conclusion we are trans swappers and not fixers. I appreciate the information. My Kate dad was a big believer in shift kits. I wil be looking into having that done if needed.

Im a happy little camper. I was at the boneyard and came across this door panel. At first I was thinking it’s for manual window cranks and did not think much about it. I just grabbed it to have. It actually the exact one u need. I just discovered this.
IMG_4140.jpeg

It does have some water damage at the bottom but far better shape than the one I have. I will stop by Hobby Lobby and get some new backing board and see if I can repair the old one if possible.

On a side note. I am going to talk to some transmissions shops to look at or possibly rebuild the transmission in this truck. It rolls easily in the shop so thinking it something that is over my head for the time being. Quicker I can get it road ready the quicker I can get onto other repairs. I will start in the door panel and window motor here soon. Ranger is in good enough shape for now. Just small things I will do to it a little at a time.

I ordered a replacement motor awhile back. It came with 3 different wiring plugs. The one it needed was to short. I could have extended it but thought to see if I could fix this one. I have in the past.
IMG_4145.jpeg

The little spacers were just chewed up. Some has gotten this out if the salvage yard and replaced it in the past as it had yellow marks on it.
IMG_4146.jpeg

I cleaned the broken ones out, replaced the spacers and it is now working.
IMG_4151.jpeg

The grill that came with this Bronco is broken. It is getting my old truck grill and another grill I have is donating its best emblem to the cause.

IMG_4197.jpeg

Trying to get a few things going in the Bronco. I’m not going to get this truck to the transmission shop for at least a month but plenty of mechanicals I can do. Also getting parts I bought installed and off the shelf. The grill is off of my Ranger. Better than what it had until I find something nicer.
IMG_4198.jpeg

Old grille is busted and it did get a better Ford badge.
IMG_4199.jpeg

Another part off of the shelf. Previous Owner bought it but never installed it. Reverse light is broken out. I will get a new one for passenger side later.
IMG_4200.jpeg

I just love hackery. There are trailer light kits you can buy and most electrical I deal with is hack trailer lights and stereos.
IMG_4201.jpeg

Not sure if I like this style if bulb for tail lights. Old style have worked great for years. I will go thru the lights at a later time.
IMG_4202.jpeg

Installed. Looks better already.

I went to install the heater core. Not fitting well. I think I posted on my Ranger build of the core I used in it. Hope I did. I want to order it instead of this one. I would not recommend Murray due to figment issue.
IMG_4204.jpeg

Cannot get it to seat all the way up. I have dealt with this in the past. Part quality has gone downhill.
IMG_4207.jpeg

Another part I am not using. Different style than factory. May be great but the replacement cable is not long enough, and I did not want to splice. I can splice correctly but was able to get factory motor working.
Anybody wants the motor and heater core van have them. They will just sit on shelf taking up space.
IMG_4206.jpeg

I finally got my Diff cover back on and some gear oil in. Still need to top it off.
IMG_4203.jpeg

Heater core I used. Someone wants this core and window motor just speak up.

I did get a new hood release as the broncos is broken.
IMG_4210.jpeg

I will buy parts as I find them. I don’t need a fender now but probably will on a future truck.
IMG_4211.jpeg

I'm working my way down to the valve cover gaskets. Pulling Intake to clean it up and do a tune up on my way back to the top. Yea!!! A broken wire I get to chase out. Goes to a sensor somewhere up front. Thinking oil pressure switch.
IMG_4213.jpeg

Yea!! I was just going to clean this sensor. It is so brittle, and I have 5000 tools and need 500 more. I am going to look for a thin wall socket. I had to pull Thermostat and heater hose to get this out. Another part to buy.
IMG_4214.jpeg

Normally I just run brass sensors under the wire brush and re install them.
