Hey, dudes and ladies! I'm new here, been meaning to join here for a couple years but I've been putting off working on my truck. Anyway, the 5 speed manual trans in my dads '05 FX4, 4.0L, 4WD of course, basically grenaded and I'm trying to help him find rebuild parts. He apparently has everything except for gear synchros. The local dealership has them but the cost of those parts plus the other required parts and labor is quite a bit more expensive than a low milage salvage yard trans, so I'm trying to help him locate the synchros from a non dealership source.

My problem as of now is that I'm having trouble nailing down part numbers. Apparently Ford used 2 different 5 speed manuals transmissions that year, and the two share a lot of parts in common, but not synchros. He did get a set of synchros but they were the wrong ones accoring to him, but he is not detail oriented and I can't get a solid answer as to...well anything really.

Can anyone tell me for sure what part numbers he will need to replace the synchros in his 5 speed manual? I kinda got the idea that the 4 wheel drive has one model of 5 speed manual and the rear drive has another model of 5 speed manual. Is that true?

Where would you order the parts from if you were rebuilding the trans?

Thanks in advance for the help. People sometimes get pretty annoyed with my forum posts being that I sometimes don't know when I'm going into too much detail...

there are parts lists in the tech library section at the top of the screen.
Rockauto has syncro rings and assemblies listed.
they have USA Standard Gear brand parts.

(EDIT)

The tech library here lists the 2001 and up 4.0L Ranger as being equipped with the Mitsubishi M50D-R1HD, with trans code "J", but Rockauto disagrees (link below). When I search Rockauto for the '05 Ranger, 4.0L, 4WD, it says the truck is factory equipped with the M50D-R1, and lists the rear drive truck as being equipped with the M50D-R1HD. Tech library does not list different transmission for the rear drive and 4 drive.

Who is correct? This is quite confusing! I really apprectiate any help with the decoding.

(End EDIT)

I must have missed something in the tech library. I only saw transmission swap specs. I'm new to the system here, though.

I did try Rockauto first thing but the problem I ran into was that they wanted to know which of the two tranmission variants I need parts for, and I'm not sure which one it is.

Do you happen to know if a certain trans was always equipped on the FX4 or another way to positively ID which trans I'm working with, aside from reading castings?

There are many places online that you can order parts from. As far as the transmission code, check the decal on the inside of the driver's door. The transmission code should be there. The code for the standard duty M5R1 is R after a certain date (I think halfway through 2001) , and J is for the M5R1-HD (or sometimes referred to as the M5HD).

Also, it's a Mazda transmission. The 4.0 L came with a HD model of the M5R1, I think, but it didn't apply to all years.

Thanks for the info. The parts were, apparently, difficult to find (maybe he meant high quality, known source type parts). He ended up finding something that would work but after a couple hundred miles some of the parts let go and filled the case with hardended steel, presumably bearing and/or gear material. I miss the days of common parts saying "USA" on them.

The 4.0 trucks after 01 or so had the HD trans, regardless of 4x4 or 4x2. I believe that all other trucks had the normal M5R1, but they were slightly different than anything made before 01.

Good luck finding the synchros is all I will say. I believe there was another thread on here recently about this exact topic and we concluded that they are a dealer only item at the present, if they are available at all.

The synchros eventually turned up, from some tiny outfit in Canada if I remember correctly. That took a while, and now he needs another set, I think. At least he doesn't have to pay for this set.

The 2nd gear synchro went to a 2-piece design. There was only one company making them, so they decided to price gouge everyone who needs the set. I got dinged with that cost. $550 at the time I had the transmission rebuilt.

That is ridiculous, seems like the kind of back room deal that two frat bros made to get rich off of poor people. Was it not possible to find NOS of the old design? I'm not sure what was used this time but I'm sure no one was willing to pay $550 for a single synchro set.

It wasn't for a complete synchro set. It was for the 2nd gear set(pair). https://www.anaheimgear.com/transmi...1/m5r1-2nd-gear-multi-piece-syncro-ring-01-04

The issue here is if you have to replace it you have to pay the price. One manufacturer makes it and they are taking advantage of the situation.

Nice, they have the Ford part number listed there: 2L5Z-7124BA. And it looks like the OEM part is only ~$300.... only 300  In stock on eBay too, USA Standard Gear brand https://www.ebay.com/itm/284694444489?hash=item42491c79c9:g:a4wAAOSw15hiKknd

At the prices they want for that synchro it is almost worthwhile just to buy a reman trans and save yourself the headache of tearing into it. The bearing/synchro kits for the older transmissions were only like $150 at most.
