Swapping side view mirrors

My 92 extended cab truck has those big chrome swing out mirrors that have banged into more than a few things over the years. I was thinking of replacing them with the factory "black flag" mirrors.

Wondering if anyone has done this? Do the holes line up or is it an ugly looking retro fit?

Any good sources for those black flag mirrors? I have heard they have improved on the design over the years and even made the tensioner adjustable so they can be easily tightened when the mirrors starts to flop down.

I changed mine out about six years ago...the top holes line up perfectly...as long as the inside plate is there you can use the same screws.

Mine were purchased new from Canadian Tire for about $30 each...but I'm sure LMC or most auto parts stores can get them for you...haven't seen them around myself, but I haven't been looking.

I just acquired a 92 Ranger as a parts truck with the same mirrors so I might keep them as a spare when I take the truck apart...

I think the only thing you have to pay attention to is patching the lower holes...if you're reasonably good with body filler then it shouldn't be a problem at all.

I don't recall where I saw it but recall seeing a 83-92 ranger with a triangle shaped plate nicely fabricated to the door near the front & a newer style 93-2005 break away/ Explorer style mirror attached to it.

I would prefer the newer style myself...but it would require cutting the window glass...probably not a big deal to do that...that's probably the only thing I don't like about the flag style mirrors...the gap...but only because of road spray and window fogging issues that restrict the use of them...sometimes...
