I am looking to get a 5.0 for my 99 explorer. It is currently a v6 manual with an r1 trans.

If I understand correctly, I can grab a 97+ 4.2 r2 trans to keep my shifter in the stock location?

Truck is and will remain 2wd.

Yes, that would be correct, 4.2l V6 1997 and up M5OD-R2 had same trans bolt pattern as 5.0l.
And shifter was moved farther back in 1997 model year so within 1 inch of Explorer/Ranger R1 shifter location.

You can use older M5OD-R2 from 5.0l but you need to make a new floor hole for shifter and get shifter arm bent to fit and not hit dash :)

With it being "within" one inch of the stock opening, how would I line that up without cobbling my stock shifter base? Is there a way to gain that inch through the way I'd mount the shifter?
