suggested brand for shocks/struts

I have a 1999 Ford ranger xlt and wondering which brand is best to use for a reasonable price. I don't really want to buy performance ones, probably will get them from an auto shop like o'Reillys. Just some to keep the truck up to date and running properly. Monroe was coming up on a search on their website, any feedback on these?

go to rock auto or a place like that...the mark up on shocks can get retarded for decent units.

gabriel or monroe are standards...bilstien are usually better. probably spelled em all wrong though

I just bought a set of Bilsteins for my truck, they are about $400. Expensive, but they last forever and ride very well. Work great on small trucks like the ranger and tacoma. But this truck is also like new and will be in service for the next 10-12 years easy.

On my dads trucks (all f250s) I use the yellow monroe gas magnums. Great shock for the money ($30 from rockauto), but they do not last as long, are a little stiff and rust quicker.

Sounds like for you the yellow ones are the best choice. Did also put them on my sisters XJ Cherokee and the rode pretty good.

OH and another good shock is the KYB monomax. Cheaper then the bilstein, but still a monotube. Put them on an E350 bucket truck and they helped with sway control quite a bit.

For something on a budget, can't go wrong with Monroe. I just put some on my '95. When that '95 gets it's make-over and 347, I'll probably put the higher quality ones on it.
