I saw this too. Ford Ranger literally sells as many as the Mustang does.
If Ford kills the Ranger it's going to embitter its truck fans the way killing the XJ pissed off Jeep fans.
I mean, seriously, Ford saying "people who want a truck should buy an F-150" would be like Jeep saying "people who really want an SUV should buy a Wrangler, or should just buy a Dodge Caliber instead". There are levels of ruggedness-to-refinement, and I'd like to point out that Jeep fans still haven't gotten over the death of the Cherokee.
I watch the Patriot/Liberty forums as well as the Ranger Station, and in reality a newer, capable, more modern XJ that combined the best of both worlds with what made the original Cherokee so great would put Jeep back on the map again. Just as Jeep killed its four-by-four Ford killed the FX4 and is forcing its customers into ever-growing fullsize pickups when what they're looking for is a simple rugged utility vehicle.
Ford isn't being fair here. Truck buyers are looking for something smaller and Ford is trying to force them to take a bigger vehicle than what they really want simply because it's easy for Ford. If Ford tried to sell car buyers on a Taurus when what they really wanted was a Fiesta I guarantee there would be cries of bloody murder from the press, why not the same anger over the Ranger's death?
