Stalling issue won’t restart

1999 3.0 5spd 4x4. Wondering if anyone has encountered this issue. If the truck stalls in reverse it will not restart for several minutes. And yes I understand ‘don’t stall it’ but sometimes I still do backing uphill out of my driveway and not giving enough gas. Luckily it’s not very often but today at a stop light my wife stalled it in reverse and had to get help to push it off the road. A short time later I went and started it right up. Also when this happens there is a strong smell of gas. TIA for any insight.

sounds like flooding, which is why if you let it sit for a while it starts right up... no codes?, no smoke? how do the spark plugs look?
(my hunch a bad fuel pressure regulator)

Dumb question can fuel injection flood? Havent checked anything yet since it doesnt happen much but when my wife got stuck I figured I should finally look into it. I have stalled it before and it starts right back up but the no start seems to only happen when stalling in reverse. But who l knows. I’ll have to research where the regulator is located. Thank you.

It doesn't even need leaky injectors, just a couple of severely worn O2 sensors. Especially if combined with a dirty MAF and IAC. Even more so if previous problems have led to a partially clogged cat. Actually just a dirty enough air filter can do it.

All those things have been recently replaced. Very odd. Thanks.

Just keep in mind that with the quality of the parts we are getting now days, new doesn't mean it's a good part. It makes troubleshooting and repairing things so much more difficult since it can make you think something else is the problem.

Especially with the IAC. I've heard that most of the aftermarket parts aren't even using the right kind of control. (Something cheaper that IN THEORY should work well enough but it doesn't.) Stepper motor vs PWM supposedly.

Another diagnostic - when it does give you the hot/stall/no start issue, hold the throttle all the way to the floor (assuming you don't have a stretched cable and can't achieve WOT), that is "clear flood mode" - it shuts off the injectors during crank... Crank for a few seconds @ WOT then let off the gas, if it is a flooding issue it will fire right up.

Thanks all. It only happens when stalling in reverse hot and cold and has happened maybe 6x in the 5 years Ive owned the truck. I was just wondering if anyone has had the same experience. I suppose the best solution is to just not stall it. RS advice always appreciated.
