have been looking at an 04 sport trac, keeping the ranger, but looking for a bit more comfort. My question is does anybody out there have one and how long can i expect it to last with decent care, what are the major flaws or problems you have encountered.

Thanks Maumo

2004 sport trac 215,00kms (136,000 miles) V6 (4 liters) 4x4 guy wants 5000.00 nothing seemed wrong when i drove it, no leaks or weeping anywhere, idle is fine, no dash lights on, plugged it in to code reader and nothing came up......seems ok to us, just curious as to the major flaws.... (i am not getting rid of the ranger but she is tired now 270,000 on a 97 edge ranger, so we decided after putting a couple thousand dollars into it lately that it is time for a complete overhaul, I am leaning towards a street truck) so looking at something else and i fell in love with the sport trac.....

We cant help you unless you list the specs/details of the truck

30 seconds to 100+ years depending on care and dumb luck.

Around here I would consider that price a little low. They seem to be going for $8-10k in good condition, similar vintage. My dad has an '07 4.0 4x4, tranny needed rebuilding around 120k miles, not sure if that's the same transmission as in the '04 though. Other than that, there's only been a few minor issues, nothing functionally related. Had to readhere a couple trim pieces last year. The interior is still in really nice condition and it still drive very well with only really having to replace the brakes (last year around 80k miles) and replaced the spark plugs and wires this year around 110k miles.

I love my Trac. Issues you may have in its life will be the cam chain tensioners, as a safety measure I'd change em as soon as you purchase it. I went a different route and got rids of that weak link and the trans weak link. I did a V8 swap :yahoo: The price is pretty low. I'd have a mechanic shop check it out as it sounds priced to get rid of quickly...

I think Ford has put out a revised tensioner recently. We just repaired an early SOHC from some nasty chain noise with a new tensioner.

That's good to know, my Trac had 190k on the clock and I know the motor was changed at least once (junkyard writing on the valve cover). I mainly did the v8 swap for a stronger more reliable trans...

ranger svt what do you get for mileage roughy with the v8?

if your in the rest belt at all id check on the rockers.. they tend to go out on anything wit an explorer in it.

My best so far is about 17, but I'm rolling 5100 lbs on 32 tires with steel 20's and 410 gears. I also don't have my torque convertor locking up at highway speeds. With aluminium rims, tc mockup functioning properly and a modified tune (and a new air filter) I think I'll be knocking on 20 mpg...
