Something Broke

Go with a standard duty LUK clutch. LUK is the factory supplier. Self adjusting pressure plate if needed.

I replaced everything from the rear main seal out> Much of the stuff is from Auto Zone or World Pac on line outfits. I did spend the bucks for a LUK rep set. I hadn't driven a manual trans in 25 yrs and this clutch is very nice. My son said that I ought to re-bush the shifter . I urged him to go ahead. Is this your son's first 5 spd? That is not a normal mode of failure. An uneven tightening of the pressure plate bolts may been a factor. I did that once on a bug. It didn't last long and warped the pressure plate to boot. Live and learn :D

I have an update, my problem is just the clutch. I recieved a new clutch from Rockauto today. The parts in the picture are another spring that goes around the coiled springs so the clutch was spinning. I am replacing the flywheel and the manual says it needs to be lined up if I was putting the old one back so do I just put the new on and not worry about it? The manual also says I should replace the bolts and nobody has them, going to a dealer in the morning hopefully they will have them.

There is a dowel pin to set the flywheel in the right location

Don't worry about replacing the bolts if you can't find them. Just apply some blue thread locker, that's all I do. I have yet to have a problem.

It's not terribly important to keep the discs in rotational alignment, but you do need to make sure the holes are lined up or you will have trouble getting the trans back in.

Thanks adsm8 that is helpful, I'm going to check with dealer but if they don't have bolts I won't worry about it. We put this clutch and flywheel on about 5 years ago and didn't replace bolts and do any special alignment so I didn't think it was a big deal. Just wanted to find out from people that know what they are doing.

Final update

We got the clutch in Saturday, every thing is working fine except the pedal is softer than it was before. Drove it for 25 mile test and everything is working correctly no hrad shifting so clutch is disengaging right don't know why pedal is so easy to push. Had a issue with the brakes on first test, rear brakes grabbed then at second stop it felt like the rear brakes weren't working at all. Checked out brakes and the were ok so I did some looking on here and decided it might be the booster. The grommet on the check valve was dried out and split so I stole the check valve and grommet from the wifes Explorer. That was the problem, went and got new ones and put back on Explorer. $12 for check valve grommet and a new hose.:yahoo:

Thanks for the helpful suggestions but I am glad that some of you were wrong it is easier to change clutch than rebuild trans!
