Chevy trucks have the '91 k3500 with 454, 4l80e, np205, dana 60, 14 bolt - only year available with these nice pieces

Dodge has the '98 Quad Cab w/ 12v Cummins - only year the 12v was available with the Quadcab (doors on the extended cab)

Is their something similar for the Ranger? A single year that all sought after equipment was available?

Most will disagree with me but i say any 86-88 with a 2.9L is a holy grail :P

Proibely most will say a 92 4x4 with a 4.0 and a 5sp.

later,
Dustin

I'd probably say the 02-03 FX4 Level II's with the 4.0L SOHC, torsen diff, 4.10's and a manual tranny/manual transfer case. But thats just my opinion....

didnt they make a ranger GT???

Out of the box RBV ?? I'd say a 3rd gen short box Ranger - 4.0l ,D35 and 8.8 short wheel base.

or

91-94 2 door Explorer. Again, short wheel base 4.0l, 5-speed, D35 and 31 spline 8.8

or

FX4 level II , SOHC, choice of good auto or manual trans, 31 spline Torsen equiped 8.8, real 31" off road tires and skid plates.

The Ranger GT isn't all that common and I think is a neat truck.

The STX highrider wasn't really as rare but isn't all that common either.

A 4 cylinder 4x4 third gen I think would be neat, and almost unheard of. It would get decent milage and wouldn't be completely helpless in winter.

A 4.0 shortbox 4x4 or 4x2 isn't easy to hunt down either.

Explorer's of almost any configuration and FX4's are pretty common, you don't have to look hard to turn one up like you want. While FX4's got the fancy Torson and 31 spline 8.8, they also got the SLA front suspension, far less than ideal for a wheeler. I would rather have a plain jane truck with a "wimpier" 8.8 and the D35 TTB... which they made millions of.

Very good info guys. It's neat to see what was made available.

I would say that the most argued over would be.....

A 1990/1991 Bronco II with a D-35 front and a 4.0L from the factory. Rumor has it that at least two of these fine vehicles were manufactured as test mules for Ford. There are a few of us that would love to be able to prove this so that we don't get hassled during inspection time. Quite a few more than that would just love proof of it.

I've also heard rumors of factory diesel Bronco IIs and 4-cyl Bronco IIs.

I would say though, that rumors aside, a Sherrod edition Bronco II... a choptop with a soft top and sunroof, right from the dealer lot! Unfortunately the company that modified them refuses to co-operate with the RBV fan world and will not sell soft tops or the plans for them or provide any specific information on the vehicles details.

The 4l80e wasn't available in 1991. The 700R-4 and the TH400 were still in those trucks...

The transmission in my Suburban was a 4l80e. 91, 2500, 350, 14bolt. If it made it into a 3/4 ton Suburban the must have made it into the 3500 crew cab.

I would say the holy grail would be a Gen2 2wd short box standard cab with a 4.0L.

I have only ever seen 1 of these in person and I stupidly sold it, later I was told it is more rare that a 2wd short box short cab chevy. I have seen plenty of GT's and gen 1 explorer sports (with or with out a manual trans) I have seen plenty of diesel Bronco 2 when I was at det 2 in columbia (we used them to patrol).

As BDAB stated above, they did. It was a one year kind of thing. The 4l80e to round pattern 205 adapter is highly sought after as well is the ECM and wiring harness.

The heavy 2500 Suburbans and the 1 ton trucks got them. Not sure about the 2500 trucks.

Makes for a very nice setup.
