So is their a Holy Grail of RBV?

700R4 = TH350 w/ overdrive, 4l80 = TH400 w/overdrive.

th400 3 speed and 700r4 is 4speed

Yup, the 4l60e is the updated electronically shifted version of the 700r4.

I have to agree with an earlier post. I'd want a '92 4x4 4.0L 5spd. If I could just find one that was extended cab and the same color as my old '92.

th400= awesome 3spd
700r4 = gay 4spd

While the TH400 is the best auto I've had, I absolutely disagree about the 700R4. It's my favorite trans. Very low 1st and very high OD. It was the first V8 OD trans and is still around 26 or 27 years later. It can be built to any level and it's simple TV system (before the E) makes it easy to use in any application.

my aunt went threw 4 700r4s in a year in her suburban.. :icon_confused:
doesnt sound like that great of a trans to me.

she sold that chevy pile and got a ford evan and has never had a trans problem since.:thefinger:

little info on where we live.. she is my neighbor and we live on the top of a mountain with a 2200ft incline in just under 2miles and had to drive her kids up and down that hill 4-5 times a day for school and sports and stuff so needless to say the trans gets smoking hot.

we tried adding trans coolers, cooling fans, shift kits, different types of oil, didnt matter the trans would not stay together more then 2-3 months..

My dad has a '92 GMC 1500 with the 350 and a newer version of the 700R4. The truck has 140k on it, he has had it since 1994. He pulls a lot with it, the springs are whipped enough that it now squats even with nothing in the bed. He has had it flushed once, but otherwise has not touched anything major with the powertrain.

Before that he had a '81 1500 Chevy with a 305 and the 700R4, he had a gooseneck plate in the back of it to haul hay on his trailer. He had it 20 years and put one tranny in it. After he got the GMC it was the parts runner for his shop, you know how they get treated. One of his guys hauled back a dirt scraper that actually bent the hitch rather than go back and get the one ton. When 200k rolled by and most of the body was gone from rust he sold it. He got it sometime in the mid 80's and sold it in 2004.

All in all, I would say after our testing that they are a darn good transmixer.

I would have to say a Sherrod BII, or one with a 4.0, or one with pop-out windows
