So I'm a little confused about the '10+ Rangers...

There hasn't been a 4cyl 4x4 since '97(possibly earlier). 98+ if it's a 4x4, it's got either a 3.0 or 4.0, regardless of cab config.

They've been off and on the past decade on 4.0 reg cab 4x4. Last year you couldget that combo was '08 and it was a special order(aka you built it and spec'd it out to your preferences). Very scarce also is even 4.0 reg cab 2wd.

For 09+, if you order a 4x4, you automatically get the 4.0 and xcab. That's my understanding.

thats the way i found it building a truck on the ford website. order 4x4 and it automatically goes to extended cab

I've got the whole Ranger 2010 specifications in .pdf format but this was on the first page. Just went thru it earlier today and happened to notice no two door ext cabs on some models. Don't think anyone is going to have much luck special ordering

Sounds like if I want a Reg Cab 4cyl 4x4, I'll have to get a Chevy Colorado ;brownbag;

I would have at least hoped that you could get the config via special order, but if not thats pretty sad...

ooo, dont do that, those are crap trucks that dont hold up in wrecks!!!!

Maybe so, maybe not... I know after my incident this year with a grain truck, Rangers do good in crash tests... had a semi pull out across the highway in front of me and totalled my 2000 Ranger...

I thought the pulled the 4cyl 4x4 back in the late 80s from non-custom order vehicles. The engineers didn't feel that the Lima had the power to not feel like a dog pullin around the extra weight of the 4x4 system.

Also, there is no reason they shouldn't be able to put 4x4 in a reg cab. A lot of times if you go into the dealer show room and talk to the guys there they can get you ordered a truck with options combos that don't show up on the website.

Two years ago when my dad was looking for a new vehicle the one salesman told me that he could order up a brand new 08 Explorer, 4.0, manual transmission, 4x4. An options setup that was definitely not available anywhere but special order through the dealer. We didn't end up buying that, he opted for a used 06 EB. The point is, we were told is was available. Go talk to your local dealer, see if they can special order one for you.

I wonder if I could still special order a 4-banger/ 4x4/5-speed combo?

probably, like i said, might have to go through the showroom, but i'd imagine you could.

I haf a friend of mine that did something like this a number of years ago. He ordered an Explorer custom w/ a 2.3, 5-speed 4x4 & 4-door. He even went to far as to spec it out with a vinyl interior.

He had to go through the commerical side of the local dealer to do it. but he did it!

That is actually the combo I'd like to do eventually... then I'd lift it and change it to 4.56 gears so it could actually turn the tires :icon_thumby:

Yeah. I would assume that is what you'd have to do now too...

Ranger, actually, I OWN a '94 4x4 w/ the 2.3/ 5-speed combo! There's some pix in the "Show off your truck section. Granted, it's bone stock.

Don't sell the 2.3's short.

When I worked at midas ther was a Blue 94 standard cab, 4cyl automatic, 4x4 in mint condition!!! needed a VSS....It was the wifes truck.... had a 7.5 rear axle with 4.10s

Why would you want a 2.3 Explorer? A 4.0 OHV is just adaquate...
