Should I sell my Ranger?

id keep the ranger, maitaining and repairing it will be more cost-effective, locally ive seen more rangers than toy's in the salvage yards, so used parts are readily available. think theres more aftermarket goodies available too. im actaully wanting a durango 4.7 V8 ('03 or less body style) as my next tow rig. the power of that motor is awesome and its still capable of nearly 20 hwy.

Sorry guys. Toyota does suck...and you guys are right. This morning I went out to my truck opened the door, pushing in the clutch, and turned the key and bammmm....it started. I was so pissed. I wish I was in my Ranger. I hate the fact that my Toyota starts every time I turn the key but oh well.

So does my '85, what is your point? I bet there is a 198X Toyota out there that doesn't run any better than your '86 did. Mine has had more than its share of issues, but I think the cobbed in wiring of the 2.8 swap (not my doing) has ALOT to do with it. Overall after 7 years of ownership I have been impressed by this engines longitivity and what it has been though, if it blew up tomorrow I really couldn't complain one bit.

The older stuff gets the more important the maintinance history of the vehicle becomes, not so much who made it.

Sorry if I missed it, but what are the mileages of the two trucks? Normally expected or anticipated repairs would be a factor. The '98 Toyota is only four years newer than the Ranger, but still, it is a 10-year old truck.

A truck is only as good as the person who drives and works on it, whether it be a Toyota or a Ford or a (POS) Gm product or (An Even Worse) Chrysler product.:icon_thumby:

I suggest keeping the ranger, after all the work and it's still running, keep driving it till the wheels fall off:icon_thumby:

Don't care how immature that sounds. Import junk? Sure

Ever heard of SAND???

Sand doesnt clear the ice and snow the way good 'ol NaCl does :)

Thanks for all the opinions guys, if I can swing it I'll buy the Taco see if I like it and either keep it or turn it for a profit if I dont like it.

Like I said at the beginning:
My ranger: 1994 Xl 145000 on chassi, 4.0L swap 75000 on engine, 31 spline 8.8 w/ disk brakes 32000 on axle, leveling springs, rancho adjustable shocks, '97 bucket seats w/ adj. lumbar.

Toyota: 1998 Limited TRD off-road V6, 125000, locking rear diff, bucket seats, sunroof, and all the other things that come with that model truck. Blue books for $8000 (assuming its not broken).

Wasn't meaning to start an argument over toyota vs. ford. I love my ford but it has it's share of... personality traits including squeaks, rattles, and maintanace issues. I'm not expecting the toyota to be particularly better. Thanks guys.

JoshT - Your just plain dumb. Maybe a mod will ban me...so be it. You are assuming. Do you know what that means? It makes an ASS out of U and ME (ASSUME). I did fix my Ranger. I have had it for 2 years. It just keeps breaking down. I have had it fixed my the same mechanic twice and I just got sick of it.

Come-on man is that the best you can come up with? The only one assuming here is you, you assuming that your mechanic (or was it you, ya can't seem to make up your mind there) fixed it right the first time. Hell if it started doing the same thing again it sounds like he (or you) did a band-aid fix.

And yes, I will be getting another Ranger in the future. My grandpa owns a second gen 2wd short bed ranger with I think a 3.0. And when it is time...I will probably buy it. Or, I will buy a 4x4 ranger to take in the woods and beat the hell out of it.

When you do I'll be glad to read about and see pictures of it. Just if it's your grandpa's truck I hope it's you have a chance to buy it rather than inherit like a few guys I know. Hell I'd probably even like looking at pics of your Yota. Until then stop trying to bash a Ranger didn't work when you go it. You make yourself look like an ass poking in the middle of this about a Ranger that you couldn't fix, when you state that it didn't work when you got it.

Good luck; I hope it all works out good for you.

not to get back on the subject but, we have all seen a 198x ranger nearly scraping the bumper off the ground because it was over loaded, or some kids first truck(trying to spin tires and what not). i personally have never seen any thing in the back of a toyota truck, ive also never seen one tow anything... not to say that they couldnt, but owners of ford rangers usually use them/ abuse them more, generally that is why you find toyotas in better condition, that and the owners usually have higher incomes and can afford to take their vehicles to dealerships/shops for all required and suggested service.

and yes the 22r and 22re does have its share of problems, the old pump cam and rotor are notorious for going bad, cam problems too, lots more too. as far as 4cyls go, the 22r is a decent motor, but i wouldnt bring i poodle to a dog fight. we have almost 200,000 miles on my wifes 1996 explorer, still runs like new.... i dont know about you but a 5.0 is a hell of a lot more fun too drive than a 2.2 toyota motor, and i can tow when i need to, and go up hills. i work in a toyota, chevy and bmw dealer... guess what 7 out of 25 people drive to work...... rangers. here are a couple of them, '98 3.0L(240,000 miles), and a '93 explorer with 280,ooo miles on a 4.0l, the rest have over 150,000. even one chevy 1500 has 311,000 miles. all manufactures build reliable motors, depends how you treat them. and when nova's toyota does break down, he can call me, ill give him wholesale price on the parts... hes going to need it.

way faster than my bro's old 88 Blazer with a 2.8

Ya wanna talk about a waste of a motor that's the one for ya. I've never talked to anyone with good things to day about the Chevy 2.8s. Heck I even get evil looks every time I mention what my '84 Ranger has in it, that is until I point out that Ford made a 2.8 (of a completely different design) as well.

Shit, if sand was worse than salt then why are there less vehicles with rust all over them in my area? Yeah, salt is worse, and that is the fact...just look at the vehicles.

Yes, I can say that my Toyota is already more reliable simply of the fact that I bought it running and I didn't buy my Ranger running. Not bashing on Rangers...I still like them...but mine was simply a lemon...but I did really like it and I plan to buy another in the future.

pillen190 - You don't want me to call your state gay but you just did? Yeah, it's five years newer. But, my 75 Chevy runs better than either of them...and guess what...it's way older. Sure, they rust out. If you drive through a bunch of salt and blame the manufacturer for producing a vehicle that rusts out with a bunch of salt jammed in the quarters...damn you Japan!!!!!!!

Greenpiggy - I can bash anybody on any forum I choose to.

Jspafford - Yes, it does mean it is more reliable. I owned the Ranger for 2 years and had about a 6 month period of no trouble. Then, it back fired again and gave me more trouble.

pillen190 AGAIN - Never mind...I'm going to ignore that.

odie1969 - Actually I am on a Toyota forum. They accept me. Maybe you should go back to english and learn how to use grammar and something called punctuations.

dogboy - Your the man and a true Toyota enthusiast. Toyota has proven that the 22r/re is a reliable engine.

I have nothing more to say. Don't hate ford...it is some of the ford faggots that think there ranger is just god...and it is the best and nothing else is good. I lived it, it sucked, and went another path. This time was much wiser.

Rangers are gonna be junk if you buy one that is junk.........dont bash the green pig because it'd eat a toy
