A neat idea might be just to snag up a used car in addition to the ranger. For a few grand you could snag up a nice Civic and be just as happy

and rated for 47 MPG highway.
35 mpg is a HUGE drop than the rated 47. I think at WORST he'd be in the low 40s or even higher 30s.
The other consideration is, will the Fusion or any other car have the go anywhere ability of the 4x4 Ranger? I live in the country - a very hilly part of the country - and we get snow and ice in the winter. Without 4 wheel drive there would be days when I would be unable to get out of my driveway. And in deep drifting snow even an all wheel drive car would be stuck.
It seems absurd to go out and buy another vehicle like the Focus if you're taking a hit. You're saving slightly on fuel but you're paying more in the long run? Don't bother arguing fuel economy, that won't make a difference in the long run.
It sounds like you've made up your mind and you want the options. Why buy a 2012 and take a hit when you can get a slightly older Focus for cheaper and still get the economy?
Face it, you just want a new car. If you were really concerned about saving pennies you wouldn't be buying a new car.
