Shop Truck

Well this week has been full of Family stuff with my Daughter starting College and my boys getting back in the grind of going to back to school.
I got some UV protecting clear coat for the items I painted with cheap enamel. I needed this to do some of the work to the roof and the doors.
I pulled the wheels to clean and clear. in the mean time I have the wheels of my race car on the truck...

Fun but with such little littles its hard to steer.

I did go to the Salvage yard today looking for a Door and a new Bed.
But Pull a Part was a bust. I did locate a few rear ends with disc brakes but I couldn't get them home since I had the bed off the truck.

Got the truck cleaned out a little this week end and pulled the back glass out.
started sanding and spot priming bald spots on the cab...

Since I'm wet sanding everything it will take a little while to finish, the back of the cab has so much texture/nucks/crannies its will take more time than I thought to really prep for paint and have it stick.

With the window out I had to take a kid to a party across town (my Daily Driver of course) and it was awesome the thumbs up at the stop lights people pointing and looking, it struck me there aren't many hot rods in my area and the truck is a spectacle for most in this college town. So in the way to drop the kid off we had a REAL hot rod Moment! of that was legend! It started to Rain! those big a$$ tires was tossing water in the cab and on the inside of the windshield!!! I just started laughing...
Dropped the kid off and the ride back home was still awesome even though I was alone
The passenger side of the windshield had a slight silloet of my kid!
It only rained in Norman. freaky!

Heres a look at the notorious shifter and steering wheel. I have no idea how to make the dash look better, I'm not a fan of these trucks dashes

Pull the dash out and put in a mustang dash, OR, do what the one fellow did with his ranger and put a old car dash in it.

There is no real benifit to wetsanding as opposed to doing it dry.. There is some stuff you can get at an automotive paint store to help with sanding in tight spots like the back of the cab.. Instead of sand paper use a red Scotch Brite pad and the stuff I am talking about.. It comes in a bucket and you wet a SB pad with water dip it in the stuff and scrub away.... I don't know the name of the stuff (I always called it poopie) so I forgot what it is really called.. just describe how it is used and they can tell you what to get... Once you are done sanding... rinse it off good... Bam Done!

Multi..

I'm a big fan of scuffing with scotch bright but I started out hitting the paint with a DA and 320 but the crap repaint job instantly just balled up in the paper... I cant feather chips with scotch bright, the old paint is dry and chalky on the surface so I'm hitting it with 220 wet and its keeping the paper clean to remove the surface and I attack it with red scotch bright ....I wished I could just DA the dam thing but I'm stuck with whats working.

Sounds like the paint wasn't mixed right when it was repainted or it is laquer... Dude that does suck!! If you don't prime the whole thing be careful the new paint may cause it to wrinkle or bust up.. What you have done so far looks very cool!! I love the look.. Reminds me of an old gasser with those wheels and tires...

I was also pissed when I couldn't use the 80 grit on the grinder to remove the paint due to it balling up...it just glazed the sanding disc. So I had used 36 grit on it ...Train wreck.

So I've tried what I could to get this far...Short of a chemical peel!

I'm always open to input. And I never thought of how the product was mixed, just new it was wrong and aggravated progress.

Thanks for the compliments.

Does the paint have a lot of chips? also is it really thick? You may want to get a small tub of the stuff I was talking about to try and then wetsand only where you have to.. That stuff is pretty good.. I have gone through clear and basecoat both using it... I guess the best way to say it is it sands even though it's with a scotchbrite.. A red SB = 400 grit paper roughly...

Well yesterday I was jazzed bout laying white down on the roof, broke out two gallons of white I had stored(I was going to put them in smaller cans any ways)
Well after stirring they both are gray not a clean bright white. I wanted white.
So I went to the store and got some Valspar OilBased enamel White and Hardener.
Took my small gun and mixed a baby food jar full of paint to jams.

I had a shop teacher tell me once "If your afraid of runs you shouldn't be painting"
Well I made some curtains. the little gun had a 0.6 tip, I have the feeling it's a little small even for painting jams I had to thin it quite a bit to spray. so back to the bigger (HF 9.99) gravity feed gun .

I didn't do the whole top due to the drip rails are messed up.. the seem sealer shrunk back so I will have to do smaller coats after cleaning them out again. I did apply it with my finger rather than brushing it on. The old stuff we used to us was called Dumdum.. they don't make it any more.

Well I finally pulled the door off the passenger side and and sanded the nooks and crannies of the Door jam.(that right I only had time to do one) but I painted it and the back side of the door and reinstalled it

The door is total crap. bottom rusted out of it,,, the window seals are toast , But for now it's what I've got. the other side(Door) doesn't have a wing window and I want one.

We're still looking for shocks to suet my needs in the back since I've got the bed off..:)

Cool build! If I had a 1st gen 2wd Ranger Thats kinda what mine would look like. (i would throw in old school lime green pinstriping after the satin black was laid down)

Not to thread jack or anything but does your Chambers still have all of the pots for the thermowell and the cap for the pilot light on top of the stove? I' been looking for replacement parts for mine after we got it from my grandmothers house.

Did he ever finish it or was that another really cool thread that just goes away after you getr interested in it?

if he finished it, he hasn't posted any pictures of it, I can't remember what the person name was, but the truck was a first gen and red and white.

I remember seeing it... It would look awesome in an old school type build.
