Replacing heater core and hoses

Tomorrow I plan on replacing the heater core and hoses on my 93 Ranger 3.0L. The previous owner bypassed the heater core and ran the hose from the water pump to thermostat.

I've never done this before but it seems rather easy. As I understand it the heater core has an input and and output. So which side do I hook the water pump to and which side gets the thermostat? Thanks in advance!

You hook the water pump to which ever side you hook the water pump to. You hook the thermostat to the other one.

Heat cores, unlike arrows, are not directional.

4 screws under the dash, slides right out, 20 minutes? That beats the tar out of doing one for a 2000. It took me 6-7 hours. When did they change the procedure, I wasn't looking. Ha Ha!

As with most 20 minutes jobs I always run into several issues. First I tired to only replace one hose. Turned it on and the water pump hose had a nice leak. So since I already had the new hose I decided to replace it. Easy right? Nope... The hose clamp screw was right up against the alternator and a real pain to get to. So after twenty minutes I finally found the right tool to reach in there (small ratchet with a flat head screw driver attachment). Probably would have been easier to just remove the alternator. Refer to my tag, that wasn't something I wanted to do right now.
Once I finally got the clamp off I had one hell of a time getting the hose off. Eventually I just cut a slit up the hose and pried it off.
Now the next step should have been really easy... But it wasn't. The sun had gone down and it was hovering around 3 degrees and the hose just didn't want to go on the fitting. After a lot of grunting and swearing I finally decided to heat the end of the hose with hot water. And bingo slide on easier than an extra large sock.

So my twenty minute job turned into a two hour job (or more...). But I learned a lot:
-I need more tools
-heating the hose end makes it really easy to put on the fittings
-it's cold as balls outside
