repairing recovery/tow strap

The government has standards.

Often way over an above common sense.

I prefer rope to straps any day. Rope can be re-looped, tied, taken apart etc without the need for special repairs. My static lines are 3/4" spectra. My dynamic lines are 2" poly.

I worked with a company deploying massive bouys, I just welded them but when they launched them somehow they told me I was the rigger... ZERO experience rigging these massive loads on a crane. I was given a credit card to purchase all the equipment and I went with all spectra lines. That stuff is insane strength for its diameter. (I know this from fishing) 200 pound spectra fishing line is like sewing thread.

When I was working offshore the guys on the other hitch had needed shackles with a 6 inch opening, so they ordered 4, 6inch shackles. (pretty much anything on the want list got delivered no questions asked)

Trouble is a shackle is measured by the diameter of the pin, not the width of the opening

We got off the chopper that week and looked down on the deck, there was 2, 4x4 pallets, each holding two huge shackles(each with a 6 inch diameter pin).
We were wondering what the hell are we gonna have to lift with those things! (they would have picked up a battleship)

First off... How old is old? If it’s OLD, throw it away.
2nd... What were you pulling that ripped a 25k strap? Was it something you did, or was it because the strap is old or worn? If it’s old or worn, throw it away.

We break 25k straps 2-3 times a year at work... When you’re pulling an 80k loaded tri-axle in and someone hits the brakes in the truck, the truck stops and the forklift tends to keep going... Just tie a knot or two into it and try again.

the strap is 5 years old, it just ripped the looped end off for some reason, really clean tear to as well, not many stringers. the strap on amazon is like 25$ now days, not a whole lot. ill honestly probably never use it again untill my kinetic strap breaks.

So... if it costs you $20 to repair, it’s not worth it.

Took the words right outta my mouth, Sno. At $25.00 for a brand new strap, it's not worth repairing the old one. Just replace it.

Ran across the website that I used for repairing an eye splice. They have animated gifs for almost all knots.

There's actually a better way than that one Always. I first weave the eye and then on into the shank.
It's basically the same also with a wire rope excepting the shank there just gets clamps(weave it around the eye and bring it back together and then weave the tail, then clamp it) Cable clamp saddle always goes on the live side
