Regearing Needed?

If I go from stock tires on a 2021 Ranger FX4 to 33s, would I need to regear or is the 3.71 axle ratio enough?
 
Is it necessary? No. But you will notice a difference in performance. What engine do you have? Regearing helps you keep the engine operating at the right rpms to get the best use from it’s Hp and torque curves.
 
I have the new turbocharged 2.3L V-4, 270HP and 310 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a 10 speed automatic transmission. Stock tires are 30.6" I believe. Want to go to 285/70R17, around 32.7".

Ah. Sorry. I missed that we’re in the 2019 and newer section. That probably wouldn’t be too much change. You could probably try it. And If you think too lose too much pep. Then change the gears later. Hopefully you don’t have the diff with the ring gear welded in place. But I think that is just some of the new Broncos.
 
Lol, no worries. Yeah, I've been hearing about the welded diff. I have the e locker on the rear but I hope that the front isn't welded. The problem is if it needs regearing I won't be able to regear because there are no regear kits for the 5th gen Rangers, so I don't want to buy all 5 tires to upgrade to 33s only to find out that it does need regearing.

Read through the “Loan Ranger” articles here on this website. I know Jim put aftermarket wheels and tires on it. I just don’t remember what size he used.

I doubt you would notice any difference whatsoever. You're only going up 2 inches and the engine has plenty of power and the 10 speed trans has plenty of gearing to compensate. All you'd need to do is have the speedometer corrected.

What if I choose to go with 35s?

FWIW the Bronco with 35's and a 2.3EB/10spd has 4.70's. The one with 32's are running 4.46's. There is no real world reviews as of yet on how they drive with that gearing...

However those were pretty deep gears 20 years ago when people were turning 35's with a 160hp 4.0 (and less)

For your regearing pleasure at least some Rangers have the ring gear welded to the differential carrier in the rear. I have heard rumbles that was only on trucks with the factory locker but as of yet I have not seen it confirmed that they are not doing that to all of them.

Jim seemed pretty happy with 32's and the factory 3.73's. He also towed TRS2 (lifted '96 Supercab) on a dolly from Ohio to Texas with that setup...

On an older ranger yea I'd be concerned about gears but your talking about a truck with double the torque and double the trans gearing than any previous ranger. I wouldn't think twice about 33's on a 2019+. 35's or bigger and id start worrying about my low end power.

No

Sasquatch package has a different front axle and 4.70's to go with 35's
The Black Diamond we have on order has the same basic running gear as a Ranger but with 4.46's to go with 32's
As of yet 37's are not available but are rumored on the "Warthog" which has nothing formally released.

My gut is they went on the deep side with the Bronco... but it is what it is. My old 200hp 302 spins 31's fine with 3.73's, I don't think something with almost half a again more power and peak torque almost off idle would really need to jump to 4.46 to turn a inch bigger tire.

Maybe they feel bad after all the years of 3.08/3.27/3.31's :dntknw:
