Parts needed for regearing?

4.88 will be fine if the truck has overdrive. 1983 I don't think OD was common though (if even offered). 4.56 would be the deepest I'd go without OD.

What tire size should I bump up to then? I originally purchased them for my 3.0 ranger but since its a POS I figured I would put them in my 4.0 ranger. So basically what you're saying is that i'm going to be running higher RPM's down the highway with the 4.56's and 31s? What about 32's or 33's?

33s would be perfect.

Before I invest in a set of 33's and a body lift, how much of a strain is it going to put on my engine with the 4.56's and 31's? I honestly don't care about gas mileage.
