Hi all, I need advice, I just recently purchased a 2020 Ford Ranger Lariat with 104k/km from a local dealership. It's obviously having issues shifting, when I shift into drive there's a noticeable lurch and an audible sound. On occasion somewhere between 50 and 60 km an hour generally on a slowdown there's a noticeable chug, as if it's missing a gear. I took the truck initially out for a test drive a month ago, expressed my concerns to the dealership, they agreed to change the transmission before my purchase. I just got the truck back today, with no noticeable difference in performance. It's still lurches when shifting into drive, and occasionally on a downshift between 50 and 60 km an hour.

I have a stinking suspicion that they never even changed the transmission as they said they would, I guess my question is, is there any way that I can tell if they have?

It's worth noting that I have an additional 100k aftermarket bumper to bumper warranty I purchased with it as well.

I'll accept any other advice somebody might have.

Thanks guys!!

104K km is less than 70K miles. I'd start raising Cain early and often at the dealer as the first thing. Don't let them tell you "they all do that".

I appreciate the response, most people tell me that that is a lot of mileage, and "what did I expect" Im absolutely in love with this truck otherwise, so it is a huge shame to me that it drives like it does. I'm hoping to find out there are serial numbers that can be tracked somehow on parts and I can take it back to them and show them I know it's the original part still in it. But what else could I do? Honestly... I feel like I'm gonna get screwed on this one.

you may want to look over the Ranger5G site, a number of transmission thread are there.....

70k miles is not a lot. A modern maintained automatic should last 250k+

That being said, ford put some faulty parts into the 10r80s for awhile that would indeed lead to catastrophic failure before 100k. The problem was fixed mid-year 2021.

Part number sleuthing *might* be able to tell you if they've actually replaced the tranny with a new one..

You could always ask to see the paperwork proof that they did the work. There would be a service ticket floating around somewhere, for their own record..

Honestly though.. id probably just drive the thing like a redheaded step-mule for awhile and ensure it fails while under warranty. The replacement they give you after it finally gives up the ghost will definitely be the updated unit filled with good parts.

This is definitely a thought I'd played with, so I'm glad to get a plus one on it. It kinda boils down to then how much I should fight them I guess.

It could (should) be as simple as taking them for a drive in your truck, and letting them feel how crappy the trans is acting.

If the fool says "ah that's totally normal" simply request that they take you in a ride with another vehicle equipped with the same transmission... and when it's not acting all wonky like it is in your truck.. press on them some more.

At first.. ford's procedure in hoping to fix these trannys was a valvebody replacement.. didn't work.. because the VB isn't the problem.

If I had to put money on what your dealer did to fix it.. it would be that they half-assed it and just did the VB since it's much cheaper and easier

The proper fix 100% requires an entire transmission replacement.

I love the idea, but it doesn't ~always~ chug while driving either, my luck is such that it won't do it at all while driving under those circumstances. But it does always lurch hard shifting to drive. My dad has a 2021 Ranger, you don't even notice a shift. So I know it's not right.

Watch how you drive, all of your driving habits, things like the average throttle position, your manual transmission inputs, everything is logged and downloadable. So if you plan on driving it like you stole it, that is totally placed in your file. Welcome to the new boss. Hope you can receive the quality care you paid for.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I purchased the vehicle from a multibrand dealership, they had the work done by an official ford dealership. I spoke with the sales guy and he gave me the number for the Ford dealerships service manager, whom im going to see tomorrow. Since I last posted, the truck has "seemingly" gotten better at shifting into drive, theres far less of a lurch, in fact its not noticeable most of the time now for some reason. I'm worried he's going to take that as meaning his job is finished, but the truck still shakes while shifting especially in low gears over even terrain. Im headed there first thing tomorrow morning, wish me luck! And if theres anything anyone can think I should ask or say I'm always open to ideas and advice.

Thanks again guys.

i suspect a converter. cdf drum basket.

quote from artical.........

Higher mileage units experience issues with the CIDAS solenoid retaining clips becoming loose (figure 6). It is a spring-type clip designed to keep the base of the solenoid secure in the bore. However, the clip flattens with time, allowing the solenoid to move in the bore, causing wear in the area where the solenoid sits. In addition, the movement of the solenoid causes inaccurate control of the valve, resulting in flared or binding shifts. Currently, the clips are not available and must be secured from a ‘donor’ valve body. However, the aftermarket has a solution in the works!

Issues of binding, flared shifts, and neutralizing are more common with 10R80 applications. Gear ratio codes may or may not be present. These concerns are caused by the inner sleeve of the C-D-F drum moving out of position (figure 7). A diagnosis usually results in varied shift concerns that can not be corrected using a drive relearn procedure. Changing the valve body will often make the issue worse. Replace the drum as necessary.

While the design is similar to the 10R80, the 10R60 is experiencing growing pains. An issue of harsh 6-7 shift is attributed to the A-clutch return spring snap ring popping off (figure 8). There is an updated housing assembly to correct this issue.

the most important thing

it must have specified fluid.

IT WANTS TO BE HOT

it is built to run hot

so pay attention to it

Sorry for the double post folks!

*UPDATE*

I just got back from the Ford dealership that "repaired" the transmission, they told me that the new transmissions are adaptive and that the stutter I'm feeling is the trucks programming learning my driving habits and adjusting accordingly, since it doesn't know how I drive, it doesn't know when to shift up and shift down. They said that I should come back after I've put about 2000 km on it (I've put 1200 km on since the 27th) and if its still doing it, they'll have a look. So I'm tentatively booked for repair next tuesday and I need to drive as much as I can between now and then to really break it in I guess.

TLDR; Basically they told me "they all do that" but still booked me in anyway.

Sounds like fairy tales and hokum to me but... I really don't know anything about automobiles. (I'm a two wheel sorta fella)

You guys are awesome, thanks again!
