Rear main seal question

4.0L pushrod engine. I removed the flywheel but I don’t see how I can replace the seal with this metal circular part with the holes overhanging on the end of the shaft and blocking the seal. I’m hesitant to hit on it with a hammer. Definitely doesn’t just pull off. Can someone give me an idea on how to do this? The haynes manual doesn’t mention this part. As you can see from the straight on view I wouldn’t be able to install a new seal over it. See pics

That's a spacer for the flex plate; it does just pop off.

Yours likely has some corrosion sticking it onto the crank. Spray some Kroil, Liquid Wrench or WD40 on it, let it sit a little and then LIGHTLY tap on it with a little hammer. When it breaks loose, just work it back and forth with you hand till it pulls off.

Just don't wail on it with BFH; it's pot metal and breaks easily.
