Last weekend against the advice of others, not following the Haynes manual and totally disregarding common sense. I tried to drop my transmission and transfer case as a unit. WOW, that was stupid! Even with a transmission jack it was a weight and balance nightmare. I brought in my floorjack and a bottle jack for assistance. I tried bracing with 2x4s. What a mistake, yikes. I ended up bolting the transmission back in, replacing the crossmember/transmission mount and removing the transfer case first. 5 bolts and 20 minutes work.

Laugh if you want, but sometimes you gotta try and do it the wrong way to see how easy the right way was in the first place.

I did the same thing a couple of days ago except by the time I realized it was a bad idea it was to late to put it back up. A couple of chains and jacks later it came out ok.

i dropped mine together, but i did it this way

I dropped mine together with a floor jack and two 2X4s stacked on it. Got it to balance oh-so perfectly!

We always took them out attached at the Ford dealer I worked at.
