how hard would it to be to swap an obd2 dash into a gen one....this is with wires and all....i am thinking of runing a s.o.h.c 4.0 into a gen 1....i know it can be done....it is a strait forward swap with wire and heater box and crap?

arnt the fire walls the same?

been there done that. first you will need a complete donor truck(it just easier) mine was a 2004 xlt 4x4 that was in a roll over. I first started with the a/c blower box and ac ducting on the inside. to do this You have to cut a huge hole in the firewall. and patch it with new piece of sheet metal. I then temp placed the dash in to get placement for the brackets. for brackets I used angle iron. and riveted it to the sides. and bolted the dash in. and for the steering wheel i used a steering shaft from a 97ish ranger. Also for the dash to fit I had to use the pedal assembley from the 04 and cut out the old bracket from the 87. now for the wiring for the computer I decided to place the ecu in the same spot as the 04 so I had to get the box and cut holes through the cawl in to the cab for the box. and sealed it in with that expanding foam stuff. after I felt I had all the wiring issues somewhat in place. I moved to the motor I decided to place the motor and trans as one unit( I felt it was easier to leave to married) my biggest issue was trying to get the y pipe and cat over the cross member that holds the radius arms I even went so far as to lift the cab thinking I could slide the cat over and drop the cab back down. I finally got to fit but did decide to leave a 1" body lift just for claerance around the tunnel (may not need it) I also learned to take the origanal motor mount brackets off the 2.9l they will bolt right up to the 4.0l that will place the motor in the right placement for the oil pan. everything else seems to be bolting in with out a problem. (execpt the front driveshaft) and for the fuel system I used the 04 fuel tank and wiring harness. and for the rest of the wiring harness I used everything from the tail lights to the head lights. at this point I'm in the processe of finish the interior with a explorer OHC, buckets seats from my shitscort, and repainting everything to match. and as for the exterior I'm doing the rustoleum paint job. and switching the front out with a d44 ttb, with a superlift 5.5 lift. and switched my rear to a 8.8.

Here are multiple threads about this.
somewhat of a build thread.

Paint job as of a few days ago.
