I have my eye on a rear disc brake conversion/lsd, and I need to know if it's worth it to go through the trouble of getting the 4.10 (he has two) and just re gearing the front, or just get the 3.73 and not worry about regearing. Anyone have experience with this? I don't even know how hard a solid axle swap would even be lol. Tips on that would be sweet too.

TIA

I have a 3.0 and wouldn't mind a bit more power, so I'm almost tempted to do the 4.10 and just fork the money over for the regearing, and I'm not planning on running any tire bigger than 33s if I do get 4.10s. But I'm pretty sure that's the max anyways?

I run 4.10s with 32s. I couldn't even imagine having 3.73 and I have SOHC 4.0

Wow, I'm almost the opposite. I've got 4.10s with 32s and a 4.0L OHV. I kinda want 3.73 gears instead. Acceleration of the 4.10 is nice, but I don't really need it. I'd rather have the 3.73, turn lower RPM at cruising speeds, and not wind out quite as fast. It's not going to happen because I do occasionally need to pull something though, and the 4.10s are nice then.

Yeah. I might buy a boat next spring, so that makes a difference on my decision too.

What kind of boat are you planning to buy? If it's big and heavy you probably want a full size. If you are looking at a ~17' metal hull (maybe glass if it isn't waterlogged) bass boat, you might want the 4.10 gears and LS. If it's a Jon Boat or smaller, you'll be okay with what you've got.

Dad's got a 17' Fisher aluminum hull and it does fine with his 2000 Ranger 4x4 that has a 4.0L and 4.10 gears. Hell, on flat ground the same truck did good with a 20' (IIRC) fifth wheel camper. I can't recall if he still had the 2wd Ranger 3.0L when he bought the boat. I know he traded that truck to get his 4wd, but it wasn't because of pulling power, it was because I bought a 4wd Ranger so he wanted one too.

Lol that's awesome. I'm thinking not too big. 14-16' aluminum hull tiller probably. Not even sure if I'll get one with a live well. I also have zero hills where I live, so there's that.

I have 3.73, and with stock sized tires and a 4.0 you will have no issues towing on flat ground.

Earlier this year I bought another ranger, towed it home with my Ranger, didn't know it was there. Right now I am in the process of moving, towing my grandfather's 12x5 loaded, with the bed loaded, still don't really notice it.

I like my 3.73's with 31's. :icon_thumby:

That boat and no hills, you'll be fine with what you've got. Change it if you want to, but it certainly isn't necessary.

Correction, 17.7 mpg. But yeah I'm forsure going to look up prices and go from there.
