Hey everyone,

I bought myself a 1998 ranger xlt 4x4 about a year and a half ago. I put 32's on it, a flowmaster 10 single to dual, and a cold air intake, but that's about all. Recently, it started to have very little power while accelerating and then I noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust. I took it in to get it looked at and the mechanics said that one of my cylinders had no pressure in it at all and it would be cheapest to just swap the engine out. So here I am, trying to figure out what engine I need. I was thinking about putting a 5.0 302 from an explorer in it, and found a used one (90k miles) for $500. However, my mechanic said that with all the rewiring and additional work, it would be much more expensive than that. Considering that, I was thinking about putting a 4.0 ranger v6 engine in it. Would that involve additional work as well like with the 5.0? My ranger used to have a 3.0 v6 in it, so I'm not entirely sure. I want my truck to have a little more pick up and go in it.

Thanks in advance!!

Cody

look up svt rangers build. with a 1998 model your in good shape for either the 5.0 or 4.0 swap.

Swapping from a 3.0 to a 4.0 will still require rewiring. The 4.0 uses batch fuel injection where the 3.0 uses sequential fuel injection. Totally different computer and wiring, but you could strip all the necessary wiring from a 4.0 donor truck of the right year. Lots of work? Yes, lots of $$$ if you farm it out. A V8 swap is much more than simply purchasing an engine. Fabrication, wiring, cooling, exhaust, etc. $500 would just be a start.

on a 1998???

get a 98 doner and get it awn...

i swapped in a v8 under 400 bux.

that would be a swap that the guy was referring to that i responded to.... as your a ttb chassis..

the 98 is a sla chassis so those are essentially a bolt in with the explorer 5.0..

the 400 dollar swap i was referring too was the v8 diesel in my pos. not a bolt in but not a bank breaker either.

I haven't figured out how to post a new topic/question here, and if someone would help me i'd be thankful.

You will still need to swap the trans with the 3.0 to 4.0 swap. As far as big expensive parts go there isn't much difference really between 4.0 and 5.0... especially on that new of a truck.

Unless you do the work yourself you will be money ahead to either have another used 3.0 dropped in it and run it and/or dump it and move on.

x2

been there. i had a mechanic put an engine (same, not a swap) in my truck. Told him he could do it when he had spare time. Well, after a solid two months, i received a call from him. the bill was 1500$+ the engine . the only thing he did was change the oil filter and oil, put in new coolant (obviously!) he didn't bothered about changing the belts or do a little tune up, nothing.

Paid the guy, got home, check the bill. he charged me two times for taxes!!! I had to get back to get my money back.

Get a good written estimate from the guy BEFORE he start working on your truck and ask what's included at that price.
