I didn;t realize (at the moment) that one of my injectors was blasting fuel full bore for about 15-20 driving miles. Replaced injector, started and engine is ticking. Changed oil (a lot of gas) and still ticking. I'm thinking I screwed the engine: Any positive thoughts? Or how expensive is a new 4.0 for a 1997?

what you can do is just keep driving it and see what if it clears up . i my self would not take the time to put a new motor in . try some lucas oil treat ment . I owned a grand am that was ticking like crazy and that stuff really shut it up. as for the gas in the oil it should not really hurt it much because when a head gasket goes that happens and you can usally change it and the fluids and drive without any problems

Thanks Chad. Eases my mind a bit. I will check to see if I can use Lucas with Synthetic oil and do as you suggested. I sure hate noises.

antifreeze and gasoline are two completely different animals.

but still, if anything, you just cleaned the inside of your engine out a bit. if this is a lifter ticking your hearing, i have to wonder if you have a collapsed lifter due to a loose chunk of sludge gumming it up.

gas will eat the surface of the bearings but that would not be a tick

uhh Wouldn't gasoline simply thin the oil to a lower viscosity? It would still be somewhat oil but thinner? I wonder how full the dipstick read when checked.

I would change the oil and filter again after driving it 50 or so miles just to make sure all the gas is out.

mass gas in the oil will wash the oil film off of everything. And the 4.0ls top end dose not have the best oiling system.

SO there is a good chance you washed all the oil off the rockers and pushrods.

is it a sharp fast click like ,,,or a longer TAACK TACCCK TACCCK sound?

fast and sharp, tick tick tick i would bet more on the rockers and push rods

longer TACCK TACKK TACCCK sound lifter.

thats if the souds are coming from the top end.....

The weak link in the 4.0 is the lubrication to the pushrod tips

They fail without thinning the lub oil down with gasoline.

I have heard a couple of 4.0's with true "lifter ticks" but they invariably had low oil pressure from a plugged pickup screen, which admittedly is a possibility with a gasoline "washdown" of the inside of the engine.

Remember that the crap that builds up inside an engine does so because that crap is NOT soluble in the lube oil.

IT often is soluble in coolant which is why a coolant leak is so devestating...
when the coolant releases a lifetime's buildup of non-soluble crap all at once.

depending on the mileage on the motor, I would say that the push rods and rocker arms are shot. Mine started to tick at about 135K and it never affected anything. I replaced the motor at 159 just because my bottom end started to go and i basically got a motor for free. Therese a website that sales new push rods and rocker arms for like 190 bucks but i forget the name. maybe someone on here knows.
