Howdy, I’m having some trouble fitting a good fan,
I have about 2 inches between water pump and radiator,
I’m using the 4.0 double core radiator,
Wondering if anyone could find me an electric fan, or an idea on how to
Cool this small block

What is wrong with the mechanical fan that was on your 5.0? Have you driven the truck with the 4.0 radiator and it kept everything cool?

Do some digging around ExplorerForum. They've got quite a few threads on fan swaps with V8 Explorers. I've got a Contour dual fan, but won't be installing it any time soon (figuring out a good way to do the shroud is a problem I'm saving for after my swap is complete).

The OP stated that he only had about 2" between the water pump and the radiator. That is why he can't use the Mechanical fan.

I have the same issue as I am finishing up a 2wd 5.0 swap without a body lift and I didn't want to take the time to cut up the lower rad core so lower and move the radiator forward. I found the highest rated pusher fan I could get and installed it. I may end up adding an engine oil cooler also to help keep the engine temps down.

The Explorer clutch fan is designed to fit in that spot and shouldn't give you any trouble there.

Which will require the reverse rotation belt drive and a water pump that will accept the clutch.

I have 1-1/2", the fins on the clutch hub would just drag on the radiator (turning it by hand)

Thanks for the catch. I'm not sure why, but I was sure he'd posted that it was running the Explorer accessory drive. Totally misread that.

I got a fan from eBay it’s about 2.5 thick but I’m running a electric water pump

I used a Volvo electric fan in my 5.0. I had trim the Volvo shroud and rotate it 90* but it fit with about 1/4 inch of clearance and offered plenty of cooling and I live in Mesa AZ where temps regularly exceed 110* F. Later I built full shroud with aluminum and sheet metal.

What front dress are you using on your motor? The best option is to use everything off the front of an Explorer/Mounty to make some more room. Then mount the rad so its sunk into the core not hanging off the back side.
