My credo
Nothing personal. I'd rather be driving my Bug.
I really hope this is the appropriate place to put this. There is SO much information on these forums, and I don't doubt that a lot is essentially repeated in a hundred different places, but I'm so lacking in confidence and experience that I'm getting a bit overwhelmed looking for a better way to do this, so I trust that site admins will point me to the right places if this is wrong.

First real attempt at a repair project on my '93 Ranger XL (who shall be named Rick Sherman, I think) is a bust. My goal was to change out the thermostat, but I barely managed to drain a cup or two of coolant. With the radiator cap off and the valve at the bottom as open as I could perceive it able to go, it merely dripped. The reservoir didn't seem to be budging, nor did what I saw at the top of the radiator. I even pulled the valve plug out of the bottom of the radiator, which got a little more coolant out (through the plug hole, not the spigot).

After a while, I thought I would try to at least reach the thermostat. I got the hose off and *whoosh*: a non-draining thermostat housing scowled up at me as the coolant that had been in the hose ran down over the engine.

I thought, "Maybe if I run the engine? Heat it up? Move things?" So I replaced the hose atop the thermostat housing (reclamping it), and started it up. Nothing. Stood with my hand on the throttle for several minutes, holding it open. I thought it odd that while I held the throttle open to nearly the same spot the whole time, the rpms fluctuated quite a bit. Still no love from the drain tube. So with light fading, I packed up and accepted today's temporary defeat. If anybody has bright ideas, I'm listening.

As a side note, there's a plug in the front passenger-side corner of the engine bay that's not plugged into anything, and I'm not sure what it would plug into. Any ideas?

That plug might be a fog lamp harness plug maybe.....

Also if you are not getting anywhere with the petcock pull the rad fllip it upside down and run water through it for a long time and spray air in the hole for the petcock it probably has black sludge in it. Or get a new radiator. Hoses thermostat and housing.

Dont be surprised if you get a big air buble somewhere in the block or heater core after filling it up again. If you have an air compressor get a vacuum pressure setup. Follow instructions from the manufacturer.

Looking at the condition of the cap... your radiator is plugged.

Well, the pressure test at O'Reilly's showed a leak in the radiator itself, so a new radiator was already on the shopping list. *sigh* So how do I drain the system without getting antifreeze everywhere? Or should I just assume it will get everywhere and be ready for the hazmat cleanup?

Its antifreeze not the elephants foot at Chernobyl.....

Probably want a new water pump also, get the hose out and spray water through the block with the pump off then use straight antifreeze since your blocks gonna have lots of water in it. And sometimes you cant avoid making a mess. Especially with how bad that system looks.

It's gonna be everywhere... I would try pulling the lower hose with your drain pan below.

You need to spend some time and effort flushing the system before the new radiator goes in... including back flushing the heater core.

This ain't your daddy's VW...

I agree... depending on mileage... just doing the water pump while you're in there is a good idea.

Its all coming apart anyway.

Now for my excited-face.

Welcome to the wonderful world of liquid cooled.

Just think, you could have an early 2.9 /early 4.0 - if your radiator plugs up, your heads split. ?

Ahhh yes... the WTF face.

The hell?? I have places to drive between now and when I can possibly change out a water pump or a radiator. Does this mean I'm risking my engine if I use my truck to go to the places I need to go?

??? I miss my Bug.

No VW tears on at TRS...

Just fill it back up and use it... keep an close eye on temps... put this repair on your better sooner then later to do list.

It's my Ranger and I'll cry if I want to.

Yes, you can drive it while keeping a close eye on temp. I bet the rad is clogged on the bottom 1/4 of the rad.
Follow the suggestions given above and you will be on your way mechanical ineptitude to mechanical expert....might take a few decades but what's a little time? And you get to enjoy the company of the TRS family....(some are slightly kooky).
P.S. love the whiskers.
