Project Little Green Turd

Did you shift it in underpower? maybe a broken shift fork or something?

If I have the hubs locked in, I will go from 2hi to 4hi under power in straight line because front and rear drive shafts should be moving at the same speed. Never into low range under power. The indicators on the dash still work, but it may have been a fork. Have you ever seen a chain strip the teeth of the gears?

I am going to check the hubs first on the off chance it was one of those. I've had them break before. With an open front diff and one hub breaking, that would make 4wd useless, correct? The shaft in the broken hub would spin and that's it...

I want to think its not the tcase because it was rebuilt and has like 40k on it and I am not nearly as hard on stuff as you are lol. Do you have any 1354s lying around I could scavenge for parts if need be?

I've never seen a chain strip teeth. The gears should be steel so I doubt they will strip. If you break a hub or front shaft it won't have 4x4 with an open dif. I have 1354s front manual hubs front shafts and driveshafts to fit your truck.

Ok. I am going to look at it one night this week. I need to clean up some shit in the garage and I am not pulling it apart outside in 10 degree weather lol.

Im glad you keep spares lying around. I'll give you a call with a parts list if necessary.

I did pick up a compressor and impact so at least that will make my life easier.

I had 20 minutes of spare time before cooking dinner and it's not the hubs... If I get time tomorrow, t case is coming out.

I finally had time to get the t case out today. I have been working 12s and haven't had a second of free time.

Anyway, I removed the plantary section and I dont see and metal shavings or anything. Do I need to remove the front yoke to seperate the case or can I just take the bolts out and it will come apart?

Got the planetary section of the case apart. Didn't find anything unusual yet...

I am gonna pick up some RTV on the way home from work today and hopefully get the case the rest of the way apart tonight. I didn't have anytime this weekend to work on it.

On another note, picked up this impact wrench from Northern Tool and so far I love it. It is about half the length of the Ingersoll I am use to using. Torque seem good and it is of solid build quality. I think I paid $75 for it. :icon_thumby:

In the mean time, I have been DD the F250 and everytime I drive it, I think I love it a little more :icon_cheers:

So far I added the Class IV hitch to it and replaced the factory stereo with the Pioneer one I had in the garage from the old F250. She just passed inspection today which made me happy less cash out of my pocket :icon_cheers:

How did you check the hubs? lock them in and spin the wheel? Does the front driveshaft spin when you have them both locked in? Maybe you broke the spider gears or a front axle shaft. You do have that little hybrid axle.

I'll post some pictures later on. I didn't have the sockets to remove the front and rear flanges from the t-case, but I did get it apart. I couldn't find any traces of failure. While its apart, I was going to replace the mode fork, the range fork pads, and the front output shaft bearings and seals.

You make a good point about the front end. I checked the hubs and they were both fine. I spun the drive shafts and everything looked ok. I have never done anything to the front pumpkin though and it has a good 200k on it. Perhaps that is the culprit..... hmmmmmm

It really sounded like the transfer case though....

Well if you end up needing something for it, I have every possible option or atleast can get you one.

Another hybrid
true d35
Also have that disc/locked EB d44 too

Yea dad hasn't torn that EB down yet but is going to very soon. I know of a true d35 with 4.10s I can get off a friend.

I'd like the EB 44, but after I factory in the other crap I'd need for the swap, I can't justify it at the moment.

I'd go to the D35 w/ 4.10s if it was reasonable in price. If not, the old set up lasted me for 200k. I call that a pretty good run so I'd use it again. And I am still only running 31s and I am not nearly as hard on stuff as you are lol

For the D35, I'd only need pumpkin and axle shafts, right?

I'll talk to him and see what he wants. You can just swap the third member and the drivers and center axle to change over. I've never broken the 4x4 in my ranger. I have a brand new set of 31s that I was going to put on mine but I have a friend who wants to buy the truck.

Ok. I may pull the 3rd member tonight if I have time. I do remember though that I only had the noise when I had 4wd engaged in the t-case. When I put it 2 wheel, but left the hubs locked in it was fine....

Anyway, I may buy the 31s this summer. I will need tires by next winter.
